Explanation of Site Move for Quiksilver/Roxy
We have had many comments at the tournament this year from parents and players who have been told many different things about the tournament move, its future, and the future of Level 3 events in general. First, we moved the event from Orange County due to court availability issues. Our host site, Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club, had its very existence in doubt when it was time to make final commitments for the courts. Without a host site of 12 courts or more, it is impossible to run a large event like this. We have been losing many private facilities in Orange County over the past 5 years, including some we used for this event. This puts a strain on all of our tournaments – since we all vie for the same dates on holiday weekends. The public sites we had been using were also tightening their rules for usage, and for years we have struggled to get schools and public parks to open bathrooms or courts on time. We felt we needed to find a location (and tennis community) interested in growing the game in their area, and willing to give us outstanding sites who want our business. We have found that in Palm Desert, and now have both of our events there (Dunlop Jr. Champs is held in October). The move for the Quiksilver was a ‘trial’ move and we would like to find a location that is cooler in May, or hope to change our dates to a cooler time of year. We do not know what the SCTA/USTA is willing to do on those issues. If you know of any sites with 12+ courts, and 64 courts in the nearby vicinity (such as San Diego), we are very willing to approach them for next year’s tournament. Just send us a note and we will follow up.
On another note, our tournaments are held in the highest regard with the USTA, and have been lauded on the USTA website as “prestigious.” We work hard to bring you a quality event with great sites, first-class staffing, plenty of umpires, and many additions such as mixed doubles, sponsored hit-for-prizes, and free parent seminars. Most of you comment on how great it is to have a live person answer the phone and help you with your questions - before, during, and after the tournament. We have specially designed free tees for players, and one-of-a-kind trophies in all our events because we care about the kids we want this to be a memorable experience with lots of fun and camaraderie. We hope you will contact us if you have any questions or would like to help with suggestions or assistance. We are always happy to employ the parents or older siblings (over 18) who would like to work our events as Site Directors or assistants in exchange for your entry fee.

Update on Site Locations
So far, it is a "no" from San Diego. Barnes has no open dates, and Morley Field does not allow use for juniors tournaments except from noon to 4 PM. Other sites suggested were Upland/Claremont not enough courts in that area close enough together for an event this size. Weather history from the Farmer's Almanac for Palm Springs is as follows: (this year first, then going back on May 23rd for the previous 6 years): 97, 77, 95, 94, 109, 91.

Heat reminder - please read
Palm Desert can be quite hot in late May. We anticipate temperatures into the 90s. At this point (May 19) the forecase indicates we will be under the Heat Index Rule, and ALL matches will be Match Tiebreak in lieu of 3rd sets. All of our sites should have ice machines and water available NEAR the courts, but not ON every court. It is important that all participants bring their own thermos or water container with ice and sport drinks to their site each day. Most sites will offer sport drinks for sale, but this is not always possible. Be prepared to be well hydrated before and during the tournament for a safe and successful event! Thanks.
