District Qualifier Changes: Why Play ? What age Group ?
Junior changes had already been passed by the USTA for 2021 before Covid-19 has shortened and cancelled many events. The changes include a system that is exactly the same across the entire USA. Players will all be ranked nationally and then filtered for each section for endorsement etc. Moving forward the WMTA will host one closed elevated event for our membership each year. What was previously known as our "District Qualifier" will now be referred to as our "Western Michigan District Championship" The WMTA felt that simply cancelling our event was not in the best interest of our players for 2020. However, players may choose to utilize this event in different ways. Some will seek to use it to get into their age groups closed....setting them up for experience or a National Winter Championship run. Others may use the event to play their new age group for the 2021 campaign and get a head start on these changes. This year, winners or the highest finishing player needing a wild card into the Sectional Championships will receive one. This years Midwest Closed will be held in November with a small 64 player draw. Players will be selected based on a combination of ranking and UTR since the current rankings are frozen.
Please take the time to contact your local professional or organization to make a decision on age group entry that makes sense for you. If you need help, our district endorsers listed below and our district office will be happy to assist you.
