*** GENERAL SCHEDULE *** PARENTS READ PLEASE *** PLAYERS IN BOTH UA AND ELYSIUM COMPASS DOUBLES
Matches and play begin each day at 9:00 AM and may continue to 6 PM, maybe later, hopefully not. Weather is the most difficult factor to overcome, so we allow lots of leeway in order to get all the matches completed. If weather is bad we may run a bit later.
Anyone playing in both our tournament and the Doubles Compass at Elysium, should expect to play up to 2 singles matches at 9:00 and 11:30 at UA. The Elysium doubles will not start until 2 pm.
PARENTS - We seem to be getting a lot of questions about scheduling. Sorry, this is not a soccer or football game, so 22 players do not start and stop at a given time. Individual matches may last from 1 hour to 3 hours. We may have 25 players in one age group, which could take 4 or 5 rounds to complete, and 4 players in another, which may be completed in three hours. We will not know who will play when until after registration is closed at 5 PM Thursday, so by Friday morning we will know how many participants there are in each division. Then we can start putting together the draws.
As per usual, most of the parent calls come form the younger age groups, which we expect. It takes a while to learn the ebb and flow of bigger tournaments. We hate to tell you, but if your child really becomes good, you will sitting in Indianapolis, or Lansing, Michigan for a week, because the draws are so large. In a 128 draw, with full feed in, there are close to 200 matches, a day, to be played, just in one age group. Multiply that by 8 age groups and divided by high schools with 8 courts, and you can see why scheduling, or trying to predict when someone's 12 year old may be playing, is near impossible.

Thanks.

These divisions are not USTA-sanctioned to keep the overall entry fees reasonable and encourage play. Entry fee for adult singles is $20 and for all doubles is $20 per team.
Draws and results for these divisions will be posted here. Players are responsible for checking their first match time.

MATCH FORMAT AND TROPHIES
Tournament Format is FMLC - First Match Losers Consolation, so every player has at least 2 matches. We will play best of three sets for the win, with advantage (regular) scoring. We will use a MATCH TIE BREAK in place of a full third set, if players split the first 2 sets. Match tie break uses the same rules as a set tie break - except the winner of the match is the first player to 10 points, by a 2 point margin. Trophies will be awarded to first and second places and back draw champion.

*** FACILITIES NEAR U.A. HIGH SCHOOL ****
The Upper Arlington HS Tennis Courts are located close to Kingsdale Shopping Center where there are many places to eat. Giant Eagle is nearby and many items can be obtained that may have been forgotten, plus having a restaurant and bathrooms. The high school may not be open, so the bathrooms at the Wendy's, Panera, Giant Eagle, Donato's and the other restaurants are greatly appreciated.

***** FLUIDS AND TOWELS *****
This is a summer tournament, so bring lots of water or sports drink with you. We believe the rule of thumb is to have a gallon of fluids with you on court per match. Parents - that is A GALLON PER MATCH !!! We suggest you buy a gallon jug, or 2, with one for back up, and keep them full of ice and ready to hand to your players at a moments notice. Bring your own towels with you, 2 to 4 or more, when it is hot players can sweat profusely. The tournament does not supply any, you are responsible.
|
***** EQUIPMENT AND GEAR - PLAYERS RESPONSIBILITY *****
Each player is responsible for their own equipment and gear. You should have a minimum of at least one strung racket as a back up. If a string breaks, you are responsible for having a second racket to continue play. The tournament has no extras to give you. You are responsible for your own gear: wraps, grips, string, first aid kits, Band Aids, extra tee shirts, blister pads, etc. The tournament has none to provide to you.

*** DOUBLES *** DOUBLES *** DOUBLES ***
We love having doubles events, and the players seem to enjoy them also. Doubles are very important to your high school or college's success. Doubles points are huge in ensuring your team will win, in USTA Team, school or university competition. College coaches are huge on good doubles players, since that is always the first point of a team match. WE URGE EVERYONE TO PLAY DOUBLES, they are a lot of fun.
Contact Walt Thieman at the email address or cellphone listed above if you want to play doubles.
