Round Robin Competition – Four Preliminary Rounds. Round Robin competition will be held the first four days. Teams are not seeded. The teams in each Zone are separated into two flights (Flight A and Flight B) and Sections sending more than one team will have their teams distributed into the two separate flights. Each team will play four Team Matches during the Round Robin competition. See below for details on separation of teams into Flights at each Zone. Round Robin Team Match Format - Round 1, 2 & 3. A Team Match shall consist of: • 12 singles matches (6 boys’ singles and 6 girls’ singles) • 4 doubles matches (2 boys’ doubles and 2 girls’ doubles) • 2 mixed doubles matches** Round 1: boys and girls in positions 1 and in positions 4 shall partner in mixed doubles Round 2: boys and girls in positions 2 and in positions 5 shall partner in mixed doubles Round 3: boys and girls in positions 3 and in positions 6 shall partner in mixed doubles The #1 players/teams will play each other, the #2 players/teams will play each other, etc. Defaults, walkovers, withdrawals, and retirements count as losses. All singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches must be played to completion. **Note: Mixed doubles matches count towards the team score, but results do not count for national ranking. Round Robin Format - Round 4. A Team Match shall consist of: • 12 singles matches (6 boys’ singles and 6 girls’ singles) • 6 doubles matches (3 boys’ doubles and 3 girls’ doubles) The #1 players/teams will play each other, the #2 players/teams will play each other, etc. Defaults, walkovers, withdrawals, and retirements count as losses. All singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches must be played to completion. Round Robin Adjustments if Only Three Preliminary Rounds Played. It is possible for a flight to consist of 4 teams, creating only 3 round robin matches for each team. If this occurs, the Round 3 of a 4-team flight is played using the Round Robin Format - Round 4 described above. Determining the Winner of a Team Match. Each singles, doubles, and mixed doubles match counts for one point. The total possible points earned in a Team Match is 18 points. The team that wins the most points wins the Team Match. If the Team Match score is tied 9-9, the coach of each tied team shall designate one boy and one girl from their team to play a mixed doubles 10-Point Match Tiebreak to determine the Team Match Winner. Determining the 1st through 6th Place Finishers of Each Flight. All Team Matches shall count one point for the winning team. The team with the most points in its flight is the 1st place team, the team with the second most points is the 2nd place team, etc. In the event of a tie between two or more teams, the champion and other place finishers shall be determined in successive steps as described below. The Referee shall break as many ties as possible using a given step before using the next step. When breaking a tie, only the results of Defaults that occur during a match and Retirements shall be used in determining the percentage of individual matches, sets, and games won. When a player retires or is defaulted, only completed sets count as sets won and only completed games count as games won. A team who has matches that are lost due to a default, retirement, or walkover shall finish lower than every Team who has an identical match record. 1. Head to head victory in a Team Match involving just the tied teams 2. Highest percentage of individual matches won of all individual matches completed 3. Head to head victory in a Team Match involving just teams who remain tied 4. Highest percentage of sets won of all sets completed 5. Head to head victory in a Team Match involving just teams who remain tied 6. Highest percentage of games won of all games completed 8. Head to head victory in a Team Match involving just teams who remain tied 8. Highest percentage of individual matches won of the individual matches completed among the teams in the group under consideration 9. Head to head victory in a Team Match involving just teams who remain tied 10. Highest percentage of sets won of the sets completed among the teams in the group under consideration 11. Head to head victory in a Team Match involving just teams who remain tied 12. Highest percentage of games won of the games completed among the teams in the group under consideration 13. Head to head victory in a Team Match involving just teams who remain tied 14. Random drawing among the remaining tied teams Championship Team Match. The first place teams from each flight, regardless if they are from the same Section, will play off for first and second place. The Championship Team Match will use the same format as the Round Robin Round 4 with only singles and doubles matches played (no mixed doubles). If the Championship Team Match score is tied 9-9, the coach of each tied team shall designate one boy and one girl from their team to play a mixed doubles 10-Point Match Tiebreak to determine the Team Match Winner. Other Playoff Team Matches. There will be no playoff for third place.
NEW This year, the final play off matches will be a true
playoff. Meaning the 1st place team from both flights will play each
other, the 2nd place team from both flights will play each other (and
so on...), regardless of if they are teams from the same Section.
Non-Team Match Matches. In the event a team brings more than six players, any match played between players that are not in the team line-up will not count toward the team’s point total and will not count for national junior ranking.

Zone Team Championship Overview
The USTA will sanction four Zone Team Championships for the 12-and-under age division. The four zones are known as the Northeast Zone, Southeast Zone, Central Zone, and Pacific Zone. Each zone team championship will host concurrently twelve teams of six boys and six girls each (144 total players), who will participate in a non-elimination format.
The USTA 12 and under event goals for Zone Team Championship are: To introduce young players to national competition in such a way that competitive stress is minimized and competitive learning opportunities are maximized.
o To provide the best possible competitive opportunity for maximizing each child’s physical and emotional development.
o To promote the spirit of competition in such a way that the self-esteem of each child is enhanced and strengthened.
o To provide a national competition climate that focuses more on personal development and less on competitive outcomes. The goal to be achieved in zonal competition is to build a strong foundation for success in later years.
