The Third USTA sanctioned PlayFair Challenge Pilot
The PlaySight PlayFair Challenge system relies on PlaySight
SmartCourt video camera angles and gives players and officials the
ability to challenge any on-court line call with instant video
replay. Every PlaySight SmartCourt consists of five (or more)
cameras that provide instant video feedback and replay during
PlayFair Challenge tournaments.
Also, for this tournament every player will receive the video and
stats of the match to her/his account after the match for FREE OF
CHARGE.
If a player does not wish to receive the video and data of the
match, and does not wish to be recorded, a generic account will be
used for both player so the challenge system can still be
used.
The rules and structure:
Players each have two challenges per set including tiebreakers. The
potential outcomes of a challenge are the same with PlaySight as
they are at the professional level of tennis.
A good challenge means that the on-court call is reversed. The
challenging player keeps his or her challenge.
A bad challenge means that the on-court call remains the same.
The challenging player loses his or her challenge.
An inconclusive challenge means that the on-court call remains
the same (the video doesn't provide enough evidence to overturn the
call). The challenging player keeps his or her challenge.
All players need to do to challenge a line call is to say
"challenge" immediately after the rally or point concludes, and
notify the official. The official then presses the "challenge"
button on the SmartCourt touchscreen kiosk interface, and instantly
has access to the five (or more) video angles to review the
challenged call.
Other rules:
Challenges may not be carried over from one set to another.
If in fact the line call was incorrect, whether by challenge
system and/or official, that will be considered an overrule.
Challenges MUST be timely, it is not allowed to challenge a
stroke that happened during the rally if the rally has continued.
Challenges can be used to track score or play interruption.
Players should not argue or speak with each other during the
challenge process.
Players can review the video, but cannot speak, argue, or
interpret.
To overturn the call, you must conclude that the video CLEARLY
ESTABLISHES that the call was erroneous (i.e., you are 100% sure
the video shows the original line call was inaccurate)
The review process should be short and professional.
The system itself will track the challenges (successful,
unsuccessful, number remaining), so the players and officials do
not have to do so.
