Notes
This year is the 10th annual event is held in memory of Keith
Mumford (March 11, 1968 - June 28, 2009.) Keith was a little bit of
all of us but stronger than most, an ordinary guy who showed
extraordinary character and determination to make the most of what
he was given in life. Beginning with childhood Hodgkin's cancer at
the age of 13, to the massive heart attack at the age of 40,
through his 6-month struggle to survive, he was a man of courage.
He was a youth tournament player who was always good for a couple
of rounds, but not often the finals. Still he persisted. A high
school player who gave his St. Christopher's School team the depth
to literally dominate the Prep League in the mid-80s, he was an
unlikely walk-on at Vanderbilt who gave that team an extra measure
of character, determination, and love for each other that lives on
today. Keith was a club player, who in recent years could compete
with anyone. As a young man, Keith worked in the pro shops at
Raintree and Briarwood, and taught tennis at Briarwood, at
Salisbury, for the RTPA (now the RTA), and on the streets of New
York. He was successful everywhere not because he had incredible
ability, but because he had developed a special grace and
purity...in his tennis strokes and his relationships. His wonderful
spirit lives on through all of us who knew him and those who know
of him. Written by Lee Mumford
