THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR PATIENCE WITH ALL THE RAIN

SENT TO THE LOCAL NEWSPAPER, THE OLNEY DAILY MAIL:
******************************** P R E S S R E L E A S E
******************************************* The third annual Chris
Gassman Junior open was held this past weekend at the Olney city
Park tennis courts with many of our local players capturing
division titles. This tournament was sanctioned by the USTA and is
part of the 2011 junior rankings for the S.I T.A. district. The
boys 10 division was one by Noble's Austin Atwood with Isaac
Hopkins of Marion finishing second and Olney's Mac Alexander
placing third. In the girls 10 singles it was a totally local
competition with Logan Kauble finishing first, Haven Doll placing
second, and Zoe Alexander capturing third. The boys 14 singles
provided one of the closest matches of the tournament with Matoon's
Hunter Levingston winning the division over Austin Urfer by the
score 6-2;4-6;10-3. Craig Hennis also of Matoon won the boys 14
consolation. Jaclyn Shan of Olney, an incoming freshman at ERHS,
triumphed in the girls 14's winning the final, 6-4;6-4 over Carly
Hopkins of Marion. Alex Kauble won the consolation over newcomer
Savannah Lynch of Olney. Alex had previously won the Girls' 14
singles at the Midwest Qualifier held June 3-5 in Olney. ERHS
sophomore to be Kelsey Shipman showed that she may be a real threat
to win the Apollo girls singles title this fall by winning both the
girls 16's and 18's singles titles handily. She defeated number two
seed Sarah Kessle of Marion and the girls 18's final without the
loss of a game. In the girls 16s Kelsey beat ERHS teammate Rachel
Shan surrendering a single game. Eleven year old Nichole Shan
entered the girls 12 singles but had no competitors so she played
up in the girls 14's and in the girls 18's where she won the
consolation back draw over Emily Hustad, last year's ERHS #6
player. In early June, Nicole was the runner-up in the Midwest
qualifier for Southern Illinois in the girls 12's division. With
all this young talent coming up ERHS girls team should be competing
for conference championships and sectional titles in the near
future. The boys 18 singles competition was missing two of the
areas better players from Olney because they had qualified for this
district's Junior Davis cup team which was competing at the Midwest
sectional championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan. ERHS #1 Dylan
Prosser won the Midwest Qualifier and Noble's Jordan Atwood
finished fourth However, Levi Weiler, Austin Zwilling, and Nick
Kuhl competed well in the boys 18 and 16 divisions. Weiler was the
runner-up in the boys 16s to Robinson's Brennan Buchanan losing
4-6;6-1;3-10. Kuhl lost in the finals of the back draw in the 16s
to Peoria's Nicholas Khazzam. Drew Whalen also of Peoria defeated
number one seeded Noah Greenwalt of Mt. Vernon. 7-5;6-4 in the boys
18 singles final. Doubles had to be canceled because thunderstorms
stole five hours of play at the start of the tournament. Several
players from Indiana participated with the tournament having the
best turnout in Southern Illinois this year so far with the
exception of the Midwest Qualifier, a mandatory tournament. Courts
were used at three sites to conduct this tournament which included
those at ERMS, ERHS, and the Olney City Park courts. The only
downside is the fact that the six courts at the Park are in need of
major repair and resurfacing. If this maintenance concern is not
addressed soon, future tournaments will be threatened. The Olney
City Park courts are ideally located among shading trees and
accommodate spectators particularly well. The lighting is excellent
thanks to the tournament's namesake. Chris Gassmann, who was
responsible for upgrading the courts over 10 years ago. No major
maintenance has been performed since his involvement These courts
are vital to both the ERHS boys and girls team matches in the
spring and fall for they make it possible to finish the doubles
portion of the team matches. The high school and middle school
courts are not lighted. The Richland County Community Tennis
Association is the host for the seven seasonal tournaments held in
Olney and would like to thank our many local sponsors: A-1 Quality
