Congratulations
to all the winners, especially Maggie Cubitt and Joseph Brailovsky, winners of the Howard Head Sportsmanship Award! We have once again enjoyed mightily hosting this tournament, and very much mourn its passing. The referee and tournament director, partners for 12 years, were really sad to see the finish, and wish the USTA were going to keep it going. Oh well . . . .

News for Monday
First, PARKING: Please ONLY enter campus via Lamborn Road (where the traffic light is) and park in the Eagle Lot near the baseball field. You may NOT park by the dorms or courts. These spaces are reserved for faculty, staff, and emergency vehicles. You can be towed if you do not park properly.Second, Draws have been posted. If you see a mistake in the scores, please email us right away - we occasionally mis-enter them. Third, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to the courts - more traffic on weekdays! And scarcer parking on campus.

Sunday
Draws are now updated for Sunday. Let's hope for some nice weather - for a lovely Mother's Day!
|
Saturday: PLAY IS CANCELLED FOR THE DAY
Check the website later tonight for information about tomorrow.
Sorry! We tried!!!
|
Saturday Afternoon
Boys' and Girls' Doubles draws now posted - with original times. Note: We are still on a one-hour delay, so that is when matches will be called: One hour later than listed. We are actually a little later than that, but still hope to catch up.
|
Saturday morning - late
A little rain again. We are still calling the tournament one hour delayed as we still hope to catch up. GIRLS doubles now posted.
|
Saturday morning update
Rain last night, with more chance of rain this morning - though dry now. As long as it is not raining,we will try to prep the courts this morning and hope to get some play in. With the front going through today, and all our courts, we still expect to get it all in. We will announce a specific late start time when we get to the courts and assess their condition. As of now we're calling for a one-hour delay (all matches delalyed one hour), but may revise that when we get on site.
|
Weather
The weather phone number is 410 581-4760. If it is busy, that is generally because too many people are calling. Simply wait and call again. We will try to update it regularly though that is sometimes problematic from off-site, so please try to be patient. The early forecasts for Saturday are not good, but at the moment we do not plan to go indoors for the early rounds - just too many matches and too few local courts available. If plans - or even format - changes, there will be an announcement here as well, of course.
|
Draws
The singles draws are now posted. Of course, you should alwalys check the night before any match as occasionally changes do occur, and we have now had several withdrawals (updated Alternate lists reflect those changes). Information on doubles can be found below. Doubles draws will be made Saturday morning, after check-in and sign-ups are completed. Doubles play will begin Saturday - after singles.
|
Withdrawals
As we get them, we will immediately contact alternates and update the website. It appears there may not be many this year - only one in Georgia so far, none here. Note: In accordance with USTA policy: A player shall not withdraw from a tournament except for illness, injury, personal emergency, or previously authorized entry into another tournament. The Tournament Committee shall refund a player's entry fee if: The player withdraws before the entry deadline, the entry is not accepted, or the withdrawal is for previously authorized entry into another tournament.A player accepted into the main draw of this tournament who subsequently withdraws for any reason will not receive a refund.

Selection Update
1. The selection process has been completed (earlier than expected!). 2. Selected players are listed now as COMPETITORS. 3. Alternates will soon (Saturday or Sunday) be listed in order in the Tournament Reports. Those lists will be updated periodically as players withdraw, are moved from the Alternates list to the Competitors list, or continue to apply as late entrants (by email - name and USTA number). 4. If you are only listed in singles and want to play doubles, just email that desire and we will manually put you in. If you wish to be paired with someone in doubles, both players should email with that intent and we will list you as partners. 5. If you are on the Alternates list and did not provide contact information when you entered the tournament, please email us with your email address and phone number. 6. Best email to use for us: llevy@mcdonogh.org 7. Those who are already late entries will be added to the alternates list, and ordered, today or tomorrow.
|
Selection Process
Selection is a 13-step process carried out by USTA Junior National Competition and may take several days. When completed there will be a Competiitors list showing who has been accepted into the tournament. We will then generate an ordered Alternates list, which will be updated regularly as we post late entries and have withdrawals. The ordering of the list is done according to USTA policy. Alternates need not send an entry fee until we have an opening in the event, they are invited into the tournament, and they formally accept the invitation. Payment information can be found below.
|
More on Doubles
If you have been accepted for singles and want to be added to the doubles list, email llevy@mcdonogh.org. If you have a partner, supply the name. If you need a partner, see the information below: USTA rules prevent us from sharing contact information, and doubles sign-up will continue the morning of the first day of the tournament. Note that even after you email us, it may take a few days for your name to appear on the Doubles applicant/competitor list.
|
Contact Information

Contacting the Tournament
The best way to contact us is by email, especially since we have several tournaments going on, one that will start approximate three hours after the National Open finishes. Thanks! llevy@mcdonogh.org

Check-In, Player Meeting, Start Times, Practice Co
If it is not raining, players may practice at the McDonogh School courts after 3 p.m. and until dark Friday, May 12. We will have non-mandatory check-in on Friday evening (as long as we are still setting up - to 6 p.m. or so) at the courts as well – to relieve the crush in the morning. We will not have any other activities Friday night (no players meeting or other activity). On Saturday, girls’ singles will be scheduled first (at 8 a.m.). (We alternate boys and girls each year.) Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. and there will be a brief players’ meeting at 7:30 a.m. on court A. Boys’ first round singles matches will follow. Boys should check-in by 8:30, and we will have a second players’ meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the football stands next to the courts. These meetings are not mandatory but are strongly recommended. Note: The meetings are a good opportunity to find a last-minute doubles partner. All twenty on-site courts will be available for practice Friday afternoon and each morning until 7:30 or 7:45 a.m. During the day, there will be three courts on site (# 16, 17 & 18) at all times for practice and, later in the day and later in the tournament, six or nine. Since we no longer have the courts at a nearby school available for practice, we ask you to limit your practice time and share – as is necessary. We have not had to resort to practice court sign-ups over the last nine years of the event, and hope to be able to avoid them this year as well. For early morning arrivals, we remind you that we do have a concession building on site (run by the Stowers family) with coffee, bagels, full breakfasts, etc. They will be open all day with sandwiches, fruit, burgers and hot dogs, etc., etc., and we hope you will support them.

Doubles
Doubles sign-up for girls will close at 10 a.m. Saturday, for boys 12 noon. There will be two rounds of doubles on Saturday, one on Sunday, and one on Monday. It is not mandatory to sign up on line since we will have doubles sign up on site and will be asking those who signed up on line to confirm their intent to play and confirm or indicate their partner anyway. Draws will be posted as early Saturday as possible, and doubles will follow singles play. Once you have been accepted for singles, you can be added to the doubles list by emailing llevy@mcdonogh.org.

When do I play?
We alternate order of play every year, so this year girls will be scheduled first in each round, singles and doubles, including first round Saturday morning (so, no boys will play at 8 a.m. Saturday).
|
Late Entries
If you miss the entry deadline and still want to play, simply send your information (name & USTA number & telephone number) to llevy@mcdonogh.org and you will be added to the list - in the order in which the emails are received. Alternates will then be listed in the order they will be selected - as openings occur. If you are selected, we will contact you by email. If you accept entrance into the tournament, please send a check for $102.63 made out to Laurance Levy LLC to Laurance Levy, McDonogh School, PO Box 380, Owings Mills, MD 21117-0380. (NOTE: As we get withdrawals and renumber the alternates lists, the information on this site will be updated.)
|
Credit Card Problems and Late Payment
If you are contacted by USTA that you have been accepted into the tournament but that your credit card did not work, or if you were accepted into the tournament after being an Alternate, please send a check for $102.63 made out to Laurance M. Levy LLC to Laurance Levy, McDonogh School, PO Box 380, Owings Mills, MD 21117-0380. If you are accepted very close to the start date, bring you check to the tournament site at check-in.
|

In response to questions: Singles draws are 32, doubles 16. Entry deadline is 11:59 a.m. Thursday. If you miss the deadline, you can do no better than move to the alternates list, with a low chance of getting into the draw.
