WHAT IS THE ZONE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS?
The USTA sanctions four (4) Zone Team Championships (Zonals) for 14-and-under boys and girls, held in late July each year. The Zonals provide an opportunity to compete against top juniors from other USTA Sections. They provide a great opportunity to play on a fun team and to develop and improve physical, mental, and emotional skills. They also allow players to experience a competitive team atmosphere and on-court coaching, just like college tennis. For the 14s division, USTA NorCal is in the Westt Zone and will send three (3) teams, three (3) team coaches and three (3) team managers.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT & SCHEDULE OF PLAY
Each team will play four other teams so all players are guaranteed 4 singles and 4 doubles. Each team will have 12 players of 6 boys and 6 girls. There will be two flights of six teams. Singles matches will be best of 3 tie-break sets. Doubles matches will be 8 game Pro Sets with a 7 Point Tiebreak at 8 games all. Singles matches will count one point each. Doubles matches will count one point each. Each mixed doubles match will count one point for the team score but not for ranking.
Robin Round competition will be held the first four days. Each team will play four matches during the Round Robin competition. A Championship team match and other playoff team matches will be played on the last day of the event.
A team match consists of:
12 singles matches (6 boys’ singles and 6 girls’ singles)
4 doubles matches (2 boys’ doubles and 2 girls’ doubles)
2 mixed doubles matches
Each team match consists of 18 points (12 singles plus 6 doubles). In the case of a 9-9 tie, the team that won the majority of the doubles matches will be declared the winner. In the case of a total tie (no majority winner of the doubles) the Section Coach will designate one boy and one girl to play a mixed doubles "Super Match Tie-Break" to determine the team match winner. Defaults, walkovers, withdrawals, and retirements count as losses. All singles and doubles matches will play to completion.
Match-play begins on Wednesday July 25 and ends Sunday July 29. If selected, players should plan to arrive on Tuesday July 24 and must commit to the entire schedule. On the return trip, please schedule your departure for after 4:00PM to allow time to get to the airport! Please see below under TRAVEL & MEALS.
Registering for this event does not mean that you will automatically be selected. Selections will be based on the June Ranking list that will be published after the USTA NorCal Sectional Championships.
Boys and girls for each team (12s teams: 12 boys and 12 girls), will be selected from the applicants as follows:
• The winner and runner up of the USTA NorCal Sectional Championships (up to 2 players)
• Players not previously selected that are ranked in the top 5 on the most recently published NorCal Final Ranking Lists (up to 5 players)
• Up to 3 Wild Card players may be selected (up to 3 players)

* Playing the tournament to completion means a player must not have withdrawn from the tournament without playing a match. Matches won by withdrawal, walkover, default and retirement count as playing a match.
Team selections, including alternates, will be posted on the USTA NorCal Junior Tournament Schedules web page by Monday June 25. Alternates do not travel to the event.
