Tournament Wrap Up
Somehow we dodged just enough raindrops to finish - if not enough to finish the last match, which was played at Green Spring Racquet Club. Congratulations to all the participants and winners, especially to our Howard Head Sportsmanship Award Winners for 2011: Tess Fisher and John Speicher. Special thanks to ALL our sponsors and to C&A Sports for the tournament hoodies (given to the singles winners) and the terrific Wilson bags AND racquets awarded to them also!!

Monday Morning
Rain overnight but dry this morning, so we are hoping to have the courts ready by our scheduled 9 a.m. start. See you on the courts.
|
Sunday night update:
First, great to get so many hours of tennis in! Whew. Second, doubles scores were left on site, so what's here is our best guess - we'll fix the scores up tomorrow. Third, we'll again try to get a message on this site and on the weather phone first thing in the morning. First matches are at 9 a.m., but remember tomorrow is Monday, so leave a little early, and park by the athletic center, please!
|
9:30??
Courts are drying. If 8 o'clock (now10 o'clock) matches come out early, we may be able to put you out! But we are not formally moving matches up.
|
Sunday morning
Looks like a band of showers is about to hit Owings Mills, so we are going to shoot for a 10 a.m. start. So 8 am matches are now 10 am, 9 are 11, etc. If we need to adjust again, we will put a new message up.
|
Sunday:
Check the times posted for tomorrow. We now start at 8 a.m. - because of the time we've lost. We'll try to get a weather message on the phone by 6:30 a.m. Perhaps here as well - if we have good connectivity. Thanks for your help and cooperation and patience today. Somehow, we got a really good percentage of the day completed! Email or tell us at the desk if you see any mistakes in the score mistakes happen. The STRINGER will be on site at about 9 a.m. (weather permitting), so feel free to give him (or leave at the desk for him) any broken racquets you have.
|
Saturday morning
So far - dry. So we are on schedule. Weather phone has been giving us trouble and we don't have internet access at courts, but we'll communicate as best we can.
|
Friday update
Good afternoon and evening - for practice and check-in. If there is weather in the morning, we'll post a message at 410 581-4760 at 6 a.m. or so. If you call and just get a busy signal, it's just because too many people are calling at once. Wait, call again. At the players' meetings, we'll help you pair up the few remaining unattached doubles players.
|
More on draws
First few rounds of singles now posted. Doubles draws will be done Saturday noon. ALWAYS check the draws again before you come to play - they do change!
|
Draws - and rain
Draws were made at McDonogh School Wednesday night at 6 p.m. Scheduling takes longer, but we will try to have the draws posted on line as soon as possible, hopefully early Thursday. Please note, we have another tournament on site all this week (Monday through Thursday), so we’re busy! The tentative schedule for the tournament is on the tournament home page. WEATHER NOTE: We are starting to get inquiries about rain, and we are hoping this message may discourage any more of them. First, weather in Baltimore is notoriously difficult to predict with accuracy. Second, we don't know what we will do if it rains . . . until it rains. A light drizzle or a downpour late in the day provokes a different response to some early morning rain or intermittant showers. If it is the right time in the tournament, when there are both available indoor courts and not many matches, we might go indoors (we have in the past on occasion). But we are not planning on doing so, and we are certainly not making any alternate plans (changing format or dropping consolations, for instance) at this very very very early stage. So . . . please be patient, don't call or email about the weather, and let's all just wait to see what the weekend brings! Thanks for your understanding, cooperation, and patience! Competitors and Alternates Lists
Please consult the Competitors List which has replaced the Players List. The Alternates Lists are now ordered, above, by Boys and Girls. They will be updated regularly as changes occur. The ordering of the lists is done according to USTA policy. Alternates need not send an entry fee until they are invited into the tournament and accept the invitation. Payment information can be found below.

Doubles??? Confused?
Entered in doubles but not on the list? A bit of a glitch in the Entry System. If you have been accepted for singles and want to be added to the doubles list, email llevy@mcdonogh.org. If you have a partner, supply the name. If you need a partner, see the information below: We cannot give out contact information, and doubles sign-up will continue the morning of the first day of the tournament.
|
Late Entries
If you missed the deadline but still want to be put on the alternates list (late entries are added at the bottom of the list in the order received), email us your information. There is no charge unless you are selected and accept an invitation to participate. (More info on late entry can be found below.)

Check-in, Player Meeting, Start times, Practice Courts:
If it is not raining, players may practice at the McDonogh School courts after 3 p.m. and until dark Friday, May 13. We will have non-mandatory check-in on Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the courts as well – to relieve the crush in the morning. We will not have any other activities Friday night (no players meeting or other activity). On Saturday, girls’ singles will be scheduled first (at 8 a.m.). Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. and there will be a brief players’ meeting at 7:30 a.m. on court A. Boys’ first round singles matches will follow. Boys should check-in by 8:30, and we will have a second players’ meeting at 8:30 a.m. in the football stands next to the courts. These meetings are not mandatory but are strongly recommended. Note: The meetings are a good opportunity to find a last-minute doubles partner. All twenty on-site courts will be available for practice Friday afternoon and each morning until 7:30 or 7:45 a.m. During the day, there will be three courts on site (# 16, 17 & 18) at all times for practice and, later in the day and later in the tournament, six or nine. Since we no longer have the courts at a nearby school available for practice, we ask you to limit your practice time and share – as is necessary. We have not had to resort to practice court sign-ups over the last seven years, and hope to be able to avoid them this year as well. For early morning arrivals, we remind you that we do have a concession building on site with coffee, bagels, full breakfasts, etc. They will be open all day with sandwiches, fruit, burgers and hot dogs, etc., etc.
|
Doubles
Doubles sign-up for girls will close at 10 a.m. Saturday, for boys 12 noon. With the new format this year, there will be two rounds of doubles on Saturday, one on Sunday, and one on Monday. There is no need to sign up on line since we will have doubles sign up on site and will be asking those who signed up on line to confirm their intent to play and confirm or indicate their partner anyway. Draws will be posted as early Saturday as possible, and doubles will follow singles play.
|
Contacting the tournament
The best way to contact us is by email, especially since we have several tournaments right before the National Open, one that could even run into Friday. Thanks! llevy@mcdonogh.org
