Attention College and Junior Coaches
All College and Junior Coaches are invited to attend a Reception on Monday, December 27th, 7:00pm, at the Sheraton Phoenix Airport Hotel Tempe, hosted by the USTA Player Development. Coaches attending will receive a Coaches Recruiting Folder. If you are a coach and plan to attend please email Sally Grabham, BoilerSal@cox.net, and include your name, email and cell phone number.
Patrick McEnroe, General Manager of USTA Player Development, has said that “Ninety-nine percent of junior players should aspire to play collegiate varsity tennis. Only the truly exceptional should be planning to proceed directly from the ranks of junior tennis to the world of professional tennis.”
One of the most important, and often difficult, decisions that top ranked junior tennis players have to make (in consultation with their parents and coaches) is whether to go to college or whether to “turn pro.” The purpose of this presentation is to provide real data that will assist players and their support teams, while pondering the future, and enable them together to make informed decisions. We will cover information addressing financial, personal, educational, and professional development perspectives that should be considered when making the very important decision as to whether the young athlete should choose to attend college or turn professional. The following materials will be presented:
(1) The USTA player development pathway
(2) The monetary value of a college tennis scholarship
(3) Annual costs for playing the professional tour at a highly competitive level
(4) ATP and WTA rankings (earnings) needed to break even financially playing professional tennis
(5) What you can make as professional tennis player at the progressive levels
(6) Sample case studies of professional careers – including career earnings
(7) The average age of tour professionals – broken down thru top 500
(8) Career progressions of playing records in the developmental pathway including the average number of years it takes to become top 100 and the “life expectancy on the pro tour”
(9) Examples of “signing deals” with agents should you decide to turn pro

Wild Card consideration is given to players who were unable to meet the selection requirements for USTA National Championships that include sectional endorsement, appearance on the National Championship Selection List, and qualification through a USTA National Open. Applicants are not required to submit timely entries into the tournament to be considered for a Wild Card.

DEADLINE:
Applications must be submitted online no later than 5:00 pm Eastern Time five (5) days after the entry deadline for the tournament for which the Wild Card is sought. Early application is strongly encouraged.
NOTIFICATION:
Once the application deadline has passed, the USTA will confirm the applicant's status with the Sectional Association. Shortly thereafter the Wild Card Committee will meet to determine the Wild Card recipients. Only those players selected to receive Wild Cards will be notified.
|
Late Entrants
Late Entrants - players entering after the December 2nd deadline at 12:00 noon EST - will not be selected for the tournament. They are eligible to be placed on the Alternate List, but they will be placed at the bottom of the list in the order the late entry is received. Late Entrants have little to no chance of being accepted into the singles draw as the Alternate List typically consists of 50 to 150 players depending on the age division, and historically the tournament has approximately 10 Onsite Alternates per division. Late Entrants are eligible to enter doubles during Doubles Registration on December 26th but there is no guarantee you will make the doubles draw.
|
Singles Event
Singles: 128 draw with a mandatory feed-in championship through the quarterfinals. The semi-final losers in championship play will play-off for 3rd and 4th place. The feed-in championship winner and runner-up will be awarded 5th and 6th place.
Official Tennis Ball: Wilson Racquet Sports is providing the official ball, the Wilson U S Open Championship Extra Duty Ball. New can of balls will be provided for third set.

The Doubles Draw will be filled in that order. Players may play doubles only in the same age division that they are playing singles.
At 4:30 pm on Registration Day, a “Players Without Partners” Meeting will be held to match any players who do not have partners. The tournament is not responsible for matching a player with a partner. Entries will close promptly on Sunday, December 26, 5pm.
|
Alternates
Before the draw is made the tournament will replace a player who was accepted as part of a section's quota with the next available player on that section's endorsement list, and replace a player who was not accepted as part of a section's quota with the next highest remaining alternate. After the draw, tournament will replace a withdrawing player with the next highest remaining alternate. Tournament alternates may continue to look at the current list on www.usta.com, under the Reports tab. This list will be published on the website once the selection process has been completed which is usually within 3 to 5 days of the Entry Deadline.
***Please note: Alternate Lists are immediately updated as soon as we have a withdrawal no need to call and ask if there have been any withdrawals.***
|
Onsite Alternate
An Onsite Alternate is a player whose name appears on the Alternate List and is on site in hope of getting into the tournament. All such players who intend to be Onsite Alternates need to participate in the tournament registration process on December 26th so that we know you will be on site. Please make sure to register at the Alternate Check-In desk. Replacement of withdrawing players continues as described above however identifying yourself as an Onsite Alternate will allow you to receive important tournament information and instruction on how to be available if an opening occurs in the draw at the last minute.
|
Withdrawals
Withdrawals Prior to December 2nd Entry Deadline: If entries have not yet closed, a player may withdraw by going to the tournament’s USTA TennisLink Home Page - the same web page that the player registered for the tournament. Once in the system, click on the "Register Now" text in red. When taken to the next page, click on "Withdraw" on the left hand side of the screen. You will need your confirmation number from your original registration to withdraw. Because your credit card will not be charged prior to the entry deadline, no refund needs to be made. If you cannot locate your confirmation number, contact linkteam@usta.com.
Previously Authorized Entries into Two Concurrent Tournaments: If a player has previously received written authority to enter two concurrent tournaments from both Tournament Committees, the player must immediately notify both tournaments to let them know which tournament the player has chosen to play.
After Entry Deadline: The USTA Regulations with respect to withdrawals and entry fee refunds at USTA National Championships changed as of January 1, 2009. Immediately email Sally Grabham at BoilerSal@cox.net if you must withdraw from the tournament. Withdrawals After Draw Is Made: After the Draw is made on December 20th, contact Sally Grabham at 480-639-6705 and send written verification via email to BoilerSal@cox.net. Players that suffer from an illness or injury during the tournament may obtain written verification from one of our certified athletic trainers, but it is the player’s responsibility to obtain this written verification and deliver it to the Tournament Director at the time of withdrawal.
If the player is withdrawing because of a personal emergency, the player must deliver a written explanation of the situation and the Referee will determine whether the situation is a personal emergency.
Any withdrawal that does not meet the written verification requirements by December 31, 2010 as described above (and, in the case of personal emergencies, have the emergency approved by the Referee) will also result in the player being levied suspension points and any match that is not played will be coded as a Default.
If a player requests to withdraw from one event due to injury or illness, but continue to play in another event, a determination will be made by the Tournament Committee only after evaluation by the certified athletic trainer.
WRITTEN VERIFICATION REQUIREMENT TO RECEIVE ENTRY FEE REFUND:
• Previously Authorized Entries into Two Concurrent Tournaments: If a player has previously received written authority to enter two concurrent tournaments from both Tournament Committees, the player is entitled to a refund from the tournament that will not be played.
• Illness or Injury: The required written verification of an injury or illness must be from a medical professional and must be received by the tournament no later than the last scheduled day of the tournament.
• Personal Emergency: If the player is withdrawing because of a personal emergency, the player must deliver a written explanation of the situation no later than the last scheduled day of the tournament and the Referee will determine whether the situation is a personal emergency.
USTA SUSPENSION POINTS: Any withdrawal (other than for previously authorized entry into two concurrent tournaments) that does not meet the written verification requirements by the last scheduled day of the tournament (and, in the case of personal emergencies, has also been approved as an emergency by the Referee) will also result in the player being levied suspension points and any match that is not played will be coded as a Default.

Entering Two Divisions at USTA Winter National Championsips
The USTA Regulations prohibit a player from entering two tournaments that have dates that overlap by one or more days unless a player has the prior written consent of both tournaments. There are two exceptions to this rule on the national junior level.
Both the USTA National Championships and the USTA National Opens allow for a player to enter more than one age division, however, it is important to understand the consequences of this decision.
If you want to play in one of these tournaments, but aren't sure if you will get in, you may enter up to two different age divisions. When selection is done, players are selected for the oldest age division first.
- If you are selected into the older age division entered, you will not be selected into the younger division.
- If you are not selected into the older division, you will only be considered for selection into the younger division and you will only be eligible to be an alternate in the younger division.

Attention Players/Parents:
Tournament Players must enter contact information each time they register for a tournament. Due to a new policy from the USTA legal department, Tournament Directors no longer have access to phone numbers and email addresses of tournament participants unless the player has entered this information when they register for the tournament.
This means that if a player does not enter their phone and email information, a Tournament Director cannot contact them for any reason, including withdrawals, defaults, byes, rain delays, etc.
The only way to ensure that the Tournament Director has this information is for the player/parent to enter it when registering. We appreciate all of our player's/parent’s cooperation with this issue so that the tournament can continue to communicate necessary information to you.

Player Lists
As soon as the Jr. Competition Department and TennisLink finish processing the entrants, players will receive an email notifying them of their status. At that time the tournament is released to the Tournament Director and Alternate Lists will be ordered and posted on this page. Hopefully this information will be up by early next week. Thanks, Sally
