SINGLES SENSATIONS
Birmingham's Ziqi Wang, one of the nine alphabetical seeds, proved to be the best of the bunch on Wednesday morning at the Champions Club, holding off the charges of top seed David Crisovan of Hallandale Beach, Fla., 6-4, 7-5 (5), to capture the boys' singles championship of the National Open 12s. And not to be outdone, Taylor Townsend of Jonesboro, Ga., the third seed, completed her mastery of the girls' field with a well-played 6-3, 6-1 victory over No. 2 Jessie Lynn Paul of Greenville, N.C. Paul had been so impressive, dropping only four games in her previous four matches. It was the first meeting between Paul and Townsend.
|
WEDNESDAY'S MATCH OF THE DAY
Again, it's Ziqi Wang's clash with David Crisovan. The match remained tight from start to finish with Wang escaping with the opening set, 6-4. However, Crisovan rallied from a break down in the second set to force a tie-break, then trailed Wang 5-2 in the breaker. He charged back to even the tie-break at 5-all, but Wang held on, slapping a crosscourt backhand winner on match point. In the only other time to play Crisovan, Wang lost a three-setter.

DOUBLES DELIGHTS
The top-seeded duo of Floridians David Crisovan and Victor Gurevich trailed 6-3 to No. 4 Sunay Bhat of Knoxville and Birmingham's Ziqi Wang, but rallied back under Tuesday's mid-afternoon sun to capture the boys' doubles championship at the Champions Cllub, recording an 8-6 decision. In the girls' finale, the No. 1 pair of Andie Daniell of Douglasville, Ga., and Jessie Lynn Paul of Greenville, N.C., held off the unseeded tandem of Brooke Broda of West Chester, Ohio, and Meredith Laskey of Ft. Thomas, Ky., claiming an 8-6 escape.

TUESDAY'S MATCH OF THE DAY
Although David Crisovan of Hallandale Beach, Fla., was the top seed in boys' singles in the National Open 12s at the Champions Club, he had never even taken a set from Knoxville's Sunay Bhat, his semifinal-round opponent on Monday and the draw's No. 3 seed. Now he has. Crisovan survived a tough opening set, winning in a tie-break (7-3), then cruised to a 6-0 second-set decision and a berth in Wednesday's 9 a.m. championship showdown with No. 9 seed Ziqi Wang of Birmingham. Wang, like Crisovan, had never beaten his semifinal-round foe, No. 2 David Parker of Anderson, S.C. -- dropping both previous tests. But Wang was on target throughout the match and coasted to a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Although No. 3 seed Taylor Townsend of Jonesboro, Ga., owned the advantage in head-to-head matches against top-seeded Andie Daniell of Douglasville, Ga., Daniell had won the last clash. But Monday was Townsend's day in rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 triumph and a berth in Wednesday's 9 a.m. championship challenge against No. 2 Jessie Lynn Paul of Greenville, N.C., who ousted No. 9 Carlee Petro of Birmingham, 6-3, 6-0. Paul has dropped only four games in four matches.

MONDAY'S MATCH OF THE DAY
After Marshall Brown of Madison, Miss., had claimed the opening set in his third-round consolation match against No. 9 seed Tommy Paul of Greenville, N.C., on Monday morning, he dropped the second set in six, quick games. However, he gathered the momentum back in the match tie-break to escape with a 6-4, 0-6, 11-9 decision. Brown then lost 6-3, 6-3 to No. 5 seed Nikita Kardivar of Atlanta. In another boys' singles clash, No. 3 seed Sunay Bhat of Knoxville, trailing by a set, rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 10-4 match tie-break win over No. 5 Michael Kay of Alpharetta, Ga., to advance to Tuesday's semifinals against top seed David Crisovan of Hallandale, Fla. As for the girls, No. 9 seed Carlee Petro of Birmingham, Ala., charged from behind to advance to Tuesday's semis, edging No. 4 seed Tai Martin of Weston, Fla., 2-6, 6-4, 10-8. In the semis, Petro takes on second-seed Jessie Lynn Paul of Greenville, N.C. Also, No. 9 Ellie Halbauer of Daniel Island, S.C., escaped No. 5 Brienne Minor of Mundelein, Ill., 1-6, 6-2, 14-12 match tie-break in a third-round consolation showdown.
|
SUNDAY'S MATCH OF THE DAY
After dropping a hard-fought opening set, unseeded Lauren Mueller of Alpharetta, Ga., rallied to even the match with a tie-break decision, then claimed the victory in a match tie-break to pull out the 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), (10-7) decision over Sarah Vargas of Pembroke Pines, Fla., on Sunday in the third-round of the girls' consolation playoffs. In boys' singles, unseeded Jared Woodson of Hilton Head Island, S.C., survived his main-draw, round-of-16 clash with fifth-seeded Nikita Kardivar of Atlanta, escaping with a 4-6, 6-3, (10-7) triumph. He'll square off against No. 2 seed David Parker of Anderson, S.C., in Monday's quarterfinals. Also, in a consolation marathon, Terrance Whitehurst of Tallahassee, Fla., took a 6-3, 5-7, (13-11) decision over Nicolas Boron of Cumming, Ga. Terrance's twin brother, Terrell -- who is one-minute younger -- also played in the tournament.

SATURDAY'S MATCH OF THE DAY
Unseeded Alexander Santiago of Isle of Palms, S.C., survived the toughest challenge on Saturday at the Champions Club by escaping No. 9 seed Rex Glickman of Chappaqua, N.Y., 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 15-13 match tie-break in the opening round of the Natiional Open 12s Championships. Santiago later claimed a straight-sets win over Daniel Settana of Columbia, S.C., to earn a berth in Sunday's round-of-16. On the girls' side, another South Carolinian -- No. 9 seed Ellie Halbauer of Daniel Island -- rallied for a 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 10-6 match tie-break in a second-round clash. Halbauer's reward? It's a Sunday showdown with top seed Andie Daniell of Douglasville, Ga., in the round-of-16.
