NPPTC History
The National Public Parks Tournament Championship (NPPTC) was first held in St. Louis in 1923. Founded by Dwight Davis, who also created the Davis Cup, the NPPTC gave cities a chance to show off their best public parks players. Davis has a long and illustrious connection to public parks. As St. Louis park commissioner, Davis sponsored the growth of public facilities, and was responsible for construction of the country’s first municipal tennis court in St. Louis. His vision was to create an association that promoted the game, made tennis accessible to all, and encouraged communities to maintain and build tennis facilities and programs.
Since then, the tournament has seen many high points – up until 1968, the winners of the Open draws were given an automatic entry into the U.S. National Championships (now known as the US Open). And despite the fact that the event is played in a different city every year, players are loyal in traveling and supporting the event as they make friends in every state. Today, the NPPTA networks with park and recreation agencies and community tennis associations to advocate tennis facility and programming improvements.
