Sporstmanship Awards
Each year the Palmetto presents three sportsmanship awards. The Matthew Strange Memorial Sportsmanship Award goes to a boy in the 12's; This year's recipient was Brent Lett of Columbia. The Kimberly Hampton Memorial Sportsmanship Award goes to a girl in the 12's; this year's recipient was Ansley Speaks from Simpsonville. Lett finished fourth and Speaks fifth. The overall tournament award, the Malloy Evans Memorial Sportsmanship Award, went to Zachary Sprouse of Hilton Head, who played in the Boy's 18's, where he finished seventh.

Multiple Winners
Among this year's champions were Will Guzick, Shelby Rogers and Hayley Carter. Each player has multiple titles in the Palmetto Championships. Guzick won both the Boy's 18's singles and doubles titles. It was his fourth straight Palmetto singles title and seventh in the last eight years. He started his Palmetto run with the Boy's 12's title in 2001, and missed winning a championship only in 2003. His doubles championship was his fourth at the Palmetto. His ten total titles ties him with Richard Hardaway for third on the all-time Palmetto list.
Rogers won the Girl's 16's for the second straight year, and her fourth straight Palmetto singles title. She won the Girl's 10's in 2002, the 12's in 2004, the 14's in 2005 and the 16's in 2006 and 2007. She also won the Girl's 18's doubles championship this year to give her six total Palmetto titles. She is only one title away from the Girl's top ten, and she still has four years of junior eligibility remaining.
Carter won both the Girl's 12's singles and double titles. It was her second straight Belton title in both events, and her third singles and third doubles title (2004 10's) in the Palmetto. Her total of six titles ties her with Rogers, only one title away from the Girl's top ten, and she still has six years of junior eligibility remaining.

10's Champions
The singles and doubles finals in the 10's were played Sunday morning at the Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center. Top seed Adam Elliget of Summerville defeated second seeded Hampton Drake of Columbia 7-5, 6-4 for the boy's title. Top seed Jessie Mae Duman of Myrtle Beach defeated second seeded Marissa Trumbull of Anderson 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 for the girl's title. Elliget teamed with Logan Adkins of Lexington to win the doubles title 8-3 over Drake and Mitchell McGuirt of Columbia. The girl's doubles were won by Corey Caulder of Mt. Pleasant and Ellie Halbauer of Daniel Island over Rachel Gresko of Myrtle Beach and Katie Williams of Columbia 8-2. Mary Burgess served as the Referee for the 10's.

Belton Classic Champions Determined
Champions in the Belton Classic were determined Friday and Saturday. Winners were Trey Halbauer (Boy's 16's), Rivers Colyer (Boy's 14's), Miller Merchant (Boy's 12's), Olivia Self (Girl's 16's), Kathryn Miller (Girl's 14's) and Katherine Stewart (Girl's 12's). The Belton Classic includes players who do not make the main draw of 32 in the Palmetto Championships.

Guzick Receives Dunlop Scholarship
Will Guzick of Greer was named the recipient of the 2007 Dunlop Scholarship at the 18's party on Thursday night. Guzick, who will attend Harvard this fall, is one of the top ranked 18-and-under players in the south. The scholarship was present by Falloon Koon, Promotions Director for Dunlop. Koon said: "Will Guzick is a great overall player and person. His performance on the court, in the classroom and in life have all been outstanding. We are proud to present him with this year's scholarship. Dunlop has been involved with the Palmetto Championships for 25 years, and this was the 16th year for the Dunlop Scholarship. This is a great way to help our state juniors as they go beyond junior tennis in South Carolina."

South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame
The newly remodeled South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame will be open daily from 10:00 until 6:00 during the tournament. Sunday hours are 3:00 to 6:00. All visitors to the Hall of Fame will have an opportunity to register for prizes to be given away at the conclusion of the tournament. The Hall of Fame is located in the Belton Depot, directly across the street from the Belton Tennis Center.

The Wachovia Palmetto Championships has been played in Belton
since 1957 and serves as South Carolina's junior qualifying
tournament for the Southern Closed Championships. The Palmetto is a
state Level I tournament, and is open only to South Carolina
residents. Singles and doubles are played in 5 age divisions
(10's-18's). Main singles draws in the 12's, 14's & 16's are
limited to 32 players. Players are exempted into the main draw
based on their final 2006 state ranking and their 2007 state
standings (if they are in the top 10). Players who are not exempt
into the main draw must play in the qualifying rounds. Players who
do not advance through the qualifying into the Main Draw will play
in the Belton Classic. There is no further entry fee for the Belton
Classic, which is a state Level III tournament. The main draws in
the 10's & 18's are limited to 64 players, and no qualifying is
required for these divisions. All doubles entries are placed in the
main draw. For more detailed information, go to

Main Draw - South Carolina Tournament Level 1, Players who do not make the main draw will play in the Palmetto Challenge Draw. This is a separate tournament - South Carolina Tournament Level 3.
