Here's my Olney Daily Mail article: 2012 Southern Illinois Adult
Open Tennis Championships The 2012 Southern Illinois Adult Open
Tennis Championships were held this past weekend at the Olney City
Park tennis courts with Joel Powless taking a big step to being the
number one men's open singles player in the district by capturing
the men's open singles title over Tim Flatt of Benton. Tim had
reached the final with a solid victory over Olney's Dylan Prosser,
6-4;6-2. Joel defeated Michael Lynch of Edwardsville, 6-1;6-1 in
their semi final match which was visually much closer than the
score indicated. The first set in the final was very close with
Joel winning the set tiebreak. In the second set, Powless really
got rolling and finished the match with a love set. Depending
champion Drew Muston of Olney did not play due to a golf tournament
commitment. That move may cost Drew his number one men's open
singles ranking in the district. He he had beaten Joel in early
June at the Ted Rule Adult Championships, 6-4; 6-4, but later lost
to him at the Frog Island Open in Flora, Joel's hometown. Each
tournament win garners important ranking points and the SITA Adult
Open is an important win for Joel. William Caraway of Goreville
defeated Fred Nolan of Campbellsburg, Indiana in the finals of the
men's 45 and over singles. The men's open doubles was one by Flatt
and his partner Tim McKinney of Du Quoin with victories over Nolan
and Rob Lowery of Fairfield plus a second win over Dave Cary and
his partner Sonny Ritter, both of Olney. In the open mixed doubles,
Lynch teamed with his mother Linda to capture the round-robin event
with two victories over Dick Germer and Chris Barnett of Olney and
the father-daughter team of Dave and Danielle Cary. In the past,
the mixed doubles has provided the closest match of the tournamen
and this year this was the case again with the Lynch's edging the
Cary's by the score 3-6;6-3;11-9. The 11-9 refers to the 10-point
match tiebreak which was used in lieu of a full third set. The
tournament was delayed by 3 1/2 hours due to the much welcomed rain
in Richland County. Tournament director Darrel Snively wishes to
thank all the players for their excellent cooperation in tightening
up the match schedule in order to complete all play by 11pm
Saturday evening. The only negative note was that someone stole the
$300 Husqvarna orange backpack leaf used by the tournament to not
only remove debris from the courts but also was instrumental in
drying the courts quickly when the rain finally stopped. Please
contact Mr. Snively at 618-883-8647 if you have any information in
regards to this missing leaf blower. The Richland County Community
Tennis Association wishes to thank the following sponsors of the
summertime tennis tournaments in our County. Their sponsorships
help make our tournaments among the best in this area of the
Midwest USTA section. Many compliments were received this past
weekend on how the tournament was run and provided exceptional
hospitality. We hope they weren't just being nice and will come
back for future highly competitive tennis tournaments on our lovely
City Park courts which hopefully are to be resurfaced in August.
