June 2-7 Tentative Dates for 2012
The tentative dates for the 2012 Wells Fargo Palmetto Championships are June 2-7. 10U play will begin on Saturday, June 2 and continue thru Monday morning, June 4. 12U, 14U, 16U & 18U doubles will begin Saturday afternoon, June 2. Singles in these age divisions will begin on Sunday, June 5 and continue through Thursday, June 7.

Singles Champions
The finals of the 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U divisions were played Thursday morning, with the following champions: Girl's 12U-Isabelle Boulais (Hilton Head Island) Girl's 14U-Curran Carver (Elgin) Girl's 16U- Ansley Speaks (Simpsonville) Girl's 18U-Hayley Carter (Hilton Head Island) Boy's 12U-Spencer Brown (Spartanburg) Boy's 14U-Adam Elliget (Summerville) Boy's 16U-Brent Lett (Elgin) Boy's 18U-Chip Cox (Myrtle Beach). This was Speaks' second Palmetto singles title and Carter's sixth singles title. Brown has now won 4 straight, Lett 2 straight and Cox 3 straight singles championships. This was Elliget's third Palmetto singles title, and Cox's fourth.

Sportsmanship Award Winners
Three sportsmanship awards were presented during the Awards Ceremony Thursday morning. Corbin Dorsey of Anderson received the Kimberly Hampton Memorial Sportsmanship Award for the Girl's 12U Noah Britt of Piedmont received the Matthew Strange Memorial Sportsmanship Award for the Boy's 12U Rob Galloway of Greenville received the over all tournament award...The Malloy Evans Memorial Sportsmanship Award. Galloway was playing in his final Palmetto Championships, and is a 3-time doubles champion.

Cook and Koch Break and Tie Tournament Records As Doubles Champions Crowned
Joel Cook from Easley and Kyle Koch from Irmo broke the tournament record for doubles titles in one age division by a team when they defeated Sven Ivankovic and Matthew Mendez 6-2, 6-4 for their third straight 18U championship Wednesday afternoon at the Belton Tennis Center. Their third title breaks the record of two, which was held by 11 teams. Their 2007 14U doubles title combined with their three 18U doubles titles ties them with Mark Hodgin and John Bradham for doubles titles by a team with 4. The Hogdin/Bradham team record has stood 33 years (since 1977). Other doubles champions from Wednesday afternoon play included: Girl's 12U-Isabelle Boulais and Ali Despain Girl's 14U-Curran Carver and Amber Policare Girl's 16U-Morgany Chumney and Ansley Speaks Girl's 18U-Hayley Carter and Ashley Kitchen Boy's 12U-William Brown and Paul Hendrix Boy's 14U-Kyle Barr and Adam Elliget Boy's 16U-Joel Roberts and Thomas Spratt Boy's 18U-Cook and Koch.

Carter, Elliget and Brown Move Up On All-Time Palmetto Lists
Hayley Carter's titles in singles and doubles gives her a total of 12 Palmetto titles, which ties her for second place on the Total Titles for Girls with Elizabeth Proctor and Jean Evans. She is one short of the tournament record for girls, which is held by Janice Durden with 13 championships. Her 12 titles also ties her for 12th on the Total Titles By A Family list. Elliget's singles and doubles titles gives him 7 Palmetto titles while Brown's 12U singles championship gives him 7 titles also. This ties them for 11th place on the Total Titles for Boys.

Sklizovic Wins Boy's 10U Singles
Second seeded Aaron Sklizovic of Aiken won the Boy's 10U singles championships Monday morning with a 4-1, 4-2 victory over top seed Thomas Karle of Daniel Island. Sklizovic was dominent in his 5 tournament matches, losing only 3 games. This was Aaron's second Palmetto title this year. He partnered with Nathaniel Tiffany of Aiken to win the 10U doubles championship Sunday.

Champions Crowned in 10U
Second seed Zoe Cauthen of Timmonsville defeated unseeded Caroline Eddy of Hilton Head Island 1-4, 4-2 1-0 (7-1) in the finals of the Girl's 10U singles Sunday afternoon at the Anderson Sports & Entertainment Center. Champions were also crowned in the boys and girls doubles. Aaorn Sklizovic and Nathaniel Tiffany defeated John and Rivers Cahill 6-1 in the boys championships match and Cauthen teamed with Calissa Dellarbaca to defeat Hannah Coats and Caroline Horn 6-3 in the girls finals. The Boy's 10U singles finals will be played at 8:00 Monday morning at the Andereson Sports & Entertainement Center, and feature the second seeded Sklizovic against top seed Thomas Karle. Sklizovic has not lost a game in his first 4 tournament matches.

Nawabi Wins 8U Competition Saturday Morning!
David Nawabi of Spartanburg won the first 2011 Palmetto title, defeating Lily Pleasant of Hartsville in the 8U championship round Saturday morning at the Belton Tennis Center. Both players won 4 matches and lost none in round robin competition to gain their spot in the championship round. Eleven players participated in the coed competition featuring 36' courts and low compression red balls.

Kyle Koch Named Dunlop Recipient
Kyle Koch of Irmo was named the 2011 Dunlop Scholarship recipient at the 18U party held Monday evening. Hardeep Judge, men's and women's tennis coach at South Carolina State University, was the guest speaker at the event. Koch is a graduate of Chapin High School where he was among the top in his class. He was a member of Beta Club and the National Honor Society. He has been ranked as high as #1 in the state and #8 in the south in his age division. He is a 6-time All-Region player and 4-time All-State player. He led his team to back-to-back State AAA championships, and won this year's individual high school tournament. He is a former Palmetto and Southern doubles champion. Congratulations Kyle!

The Wachovia Palmetto Championships thanks the players, parents and coaches for participating in the 2011 tournament. We appreciate the effort and excellent play in hot conditions, but more importantly we appreciate the good sportmanship and fair play, which was displayed by players and spectators in most cases. We know there were exceptions, and apologize for these instances. Thanks also to our staff (led by Referee Jim Russell and Tournament Directors Rex Maynard and Mark Smith) and to the USTA officials (led by Chief Umpire Carey Washington). Thanks to our private court owners, as well as Cardinal Racquet Club, Brookstone Meadows, Anderson University, Westside High School and Belton-Honea Path High School. A special thanks to Jason Powell and Clemson Sports Medicine & Rehab who provided the Athletic Trainers throughout the week.

Going To Southerns!!!!!!!
Congratulations to all the players who have qualified to represent South Carolina at the Southern Closed Championships. Good luck in Lexington, Cary, Macon, Rome and Mobile! Endorsed players will be posted on www.sctennis.com by 5:00 Friday (June 10) afternoon. A special thanks to our endorser, Terry Ferrell, and to USTA South Carolina Junior Competition Coordinator, Jessica Amick, for their support and hard work during the tournament in selecting the players to fill our quotas. Thanks also to the South Carolina coaches who will be at each tournament...10U (Lexington)-Tom Ruth 12U (Cary)-Carl Hocker 14U (Macon)-Brian Parkkonen 16U (Rome)-Carlos Lozano 18U (Mobile)-Mark Smith. Southern Closed
The Palmetto is the South Carolina qualifying tournament for the Southern Closed Championships. The state's quota is 6 players for a 64 draw (10U) and 14 players for a 160 draw (all others). Players must play in the Palmetto to be endorsed unless they meet a specific criteria (very high Southern or National ranking). Players must compete in singles in the Palmetto in the age division in which they wish to be endorsed. Further information is available at sctennis.com. The Wachovia Palmetto Championships is the South Carolina junior
qualifying tournament and has been played in Belton and Anderson
since 1957. All 10's, 12's and 14's and 16's girls play in Anderson
during the first part of the tournament, then move to Belton. 16's
boys, 18's boys and 18's girls play in Belton for the duration of
the tournament. Singles draws are limited to 64 players (except
Boy's 10U, Girl's 10U and Girl's 18U, which are limited to 32
players). Players are selected for the tournament based on their
South Carolina standing at the entry deadline. Any junior player
who lives in South Carolina may enter. The credit card will not be
charged until the player is selected for the tournament.
Players are selected manually by the tournament director after the close of registration.
Entry to this tournament is open to specified residents only. Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, May 25, 2011 11:59:00 PM Eastern Time. Only USTA members can register online if available.
