A Tennis Tradition
Become a part of tennis history. Enter the 2010 Texas Public Parks State Championship!
United States Lawn Tennis Association President Dwight Davis founded the NPPTA to promote the sport among “regular” players, “for whom private club privileges are not available.”
The first National Public Park Tennis Championships were held in St. Louis in 1923 at what is now the Davis Cup and President of the USNLTA, and it was sponsored by the US Open in 1968.
The National Junior Public Parks Tennis Championships were initiated in 1948 by the Los Angeles County Park and Recreation Department. Its first champion was Oscar Johnson of Los Angeles, who went on to become one of the first African American males to play in the U.S. Open Championships. Oscar is the second African American male to receive a certificate of recognition from The International Tennis Hall of Fame.
