2009 Dates
2009 is the year the calendar jumps back a week. The USTA bases their tournament schedule off Labor Day, which is September 1 this year. Next year Labor Day will be on September 7, thus the dates for the Palmetto should be later. We are looking at a possible return to our old dates of Saturday through Friday (with the 10's starting the first weekend instead of the last). If we use this year's dates (Tuesday through Monday) we expect the 2009 Palmetto to be June 9-16 if we return to the old dates, we expect it willl be June 6-12. A final date will be determined after studying the school situation throughout the state and meeting with USTA South Carolina staff and volunteers. If you have input or would like to let us know when your school will be out, please e-mail rexmaynard@statecom.net. The Palmetto should be followed by the Southern Closed Championships June 20-27. Efforts are being made to have the Southern Closed start later so we can avoid the many conflicts with school incurred this year as it appears many schools will continue to remain in session through the first week in June. The calendar will move forward one to two days each year, so if the dates of the Southern Closed are not changed the problem with school conflicts will return in a few years. The dates of the Southern Closed are determined by the dates of the USTA National Clay Court Championships.

Carter and Richmond Add to Previous Singles Titles
Two players added to previous Palmetto singles championships. Hayley Carter of Hilton Head won the Girl's 14's, her third straight Palmetto title and fourth in the last five years. John Richmond of Pawleys Island won the Boy's 16's for his second Palmetto singles title. He won the Boy's 10's in 2004. Both Carter and Richmond also won the doubles championships in their age division. This was Carter's fourth doubles title, giving her a total of eight Palmetto titles in five years. With six years of junior eligibility remaining, Carter has a real shot at the tournament record for overall titles. The girls record currently stands at 13 by Janice Durden of Charleston, which was set between 1984 and 1991. Ryan Young of Charleston holds the overall tournament record with 15 titles, which he won between 1994 and 2003.

Lots of Matches for Erickson and Drammis in Girl's 14's
Emily Erickson of Simpsonville may have set a new tournament record for the number of singles matches played in one Palmetto. She won 2 matches in the qualifying rounds to advance to the main draw where she won her first round match, then lost to #3 seed Ansley Speaks in the second round. She then won 3 matches in the Feed-In Consolation before losing in the semifinals of the FIC to Sabrina Drammis, then losing the 7/8 playoff match to Brooke Busby.
Drammis was not far behind, with 8 singles matches. She received a first round bye in the qualifying rounds, so only had to win 1 match to advance to the main draw. She drew #2 seed Morgan Chumney in the first round and lost, but then won 5 straight matches before losing to #5 seed Katherine Lee in the Feed-In Consolation finals.
With temperatures ranging from 96 to 100 degrees, do you think these 2 girls are tired? Congratulations to both on a great Palmetto!
