Notes
Dear Players and Families,
First of all CONGRATULATIONS! Playing in a sectional tournament, is
a huge tennis accomplishment that no doubt has come with a lot of
hard work, dedication and some compromises (especially on the part
of the parents). On behalf of the Sunnyvale Tournament Staff, we
are delighted to have you playing in this most prestigious event.
This email will give you some general information, along with a
tiny bit of homework (required by NorCal).
The first day of the tournament is a little bit hectic with all the
administrative work that has to be done before we can send you on
the courts. Each child will receive a T-shirt once they hand in the
player/parent oath document . The attached link will bring you to
the player/parent oath document. Please print, sign and bring with
you to the tournament on the first day. Please give it to the desk
person. This will save us a lot of time if you can do this in
advance.

DOUBLES PARTNERS NEEDED: Thank you to the many of you who have
emailed us your partner selections. Due to the time it takes to
organize and schedule all the matches, it is critical that I have
this information no later than Monday mid day. I'm sure you are all
anxious to see the schedule, but it can not be done until all
pairings are made. I have an uneven number of girls signed up. If
you are not signed up but would like to play, let me know. WE have
girls who do not have a set partner. I will randomly pair you if I
do not hear from you by Monday.
WEEKEND ONE: Please bear with us because we have a lot of matches
to get in, and as you know, there is no time limit on tennis. The
officials will be monitoring your breaks and warm up, but it is
difficult to know how long the matches will take. Because we have
so many matches on the first weekend, your child's particular
matches may be scheduled with extra long breaks. But, we do our
best to keep it moving. We implore your use of constructive
criticism rather than destructive criticism as we are always open
to suggestions.
SITES: First weekend we will play all matches at two sites in
Sunnyvale: Please take note on the draw with the letters that
indicate at which site your child will play each match. PLEASE DO
NOT BE LATE FOR YOUR MATCH. You must be checked in by match time
ready to play with shoes on and bathroom breaks done. Please do not
check in and then run to the bathroom. It is critical for keeping
the tournament running on time, that you are ready to play when
your name is called. If you show up at the wrong site, this is not
an excuse to be late. Lateness penalties will be enforced.
Fremont High School (FHS-on the draw): The school address is: 1279
Saratoga Sunnyvale Rd., Sunnyvale, CA, but it sits on the corner of
Fremont Ave and Saratoga Sunnyvale Rd. and the courts are located
on Fremont Ave
Sunnyvale Middle School: (Mango Park) (MP on the draw): The address
is: 1080 Mango Ave. Sunnyvale, CA
WEEKEND TWO: All matches will be played at the main tennis center
in Sunnyvale: There will be no indicator on the draw since all
matches are played at the same place. Address is:
755 South Mathilda Ave. Sunnyvale, CA
Scheduling for second weekend will be done after play is completed
on first weekend
NEW RULES THAT WILL BE ENFORCED: Sadly, there has been a lot of
complaining about junior tennis and the amount of bad line calling
that is occurring. Please discuss this with your children. Just as
we teach our children not to lie or steal or cheat at school, we
must emphasize the importance of fair play on the tennis court. All
good competitors WANT to win. All parents WANT their children to do
well. The way we win or lose shows a lot about a person's
character. As adults, we need to help our children understand the
importance of having a good character in life and on the tennis
court. Tennis is a sport where, there is probably more losing than
winning and kids must go in, knowing there is a chance they will
lose, but it's really ok!! Good sportsmanship is the foundation of
the sport, which is why it's really the best sport on the planet
for kids!! Having said that…here is the new rule:
If a child makes bad line calls, we will be counting them. They
will transfer from match to match. After 2 bad calls that are
corrected by an official, the next bad line call will be part of
the point penalty system. The first infraction in the point penalty
system is the loss of 1 point. The second, is loss of a game and
the third is a default. This can happen super quickly, so please
stress the importance of fair play with your children.
NOT NEW RULE, BUT SUPER IMPORTANT TO REMIND ALL PLAYERS:
SPORTSMANSHIP: We are watching. We want to reward excellent
sportsmanship and discourage bad sportsmanship on and off the
court. There is NO WARNING in the code. Super important to
remember! First infraction will be code violation, point penalty.
Second, game penalty and third is a default. Defaults are rare, but
a child has the right to appeal a default, but this must be done
immediately following the default. Things that will result in a
code violation: Audible obscenities (including the word "suck"),
belittling your opponent by calling his great shots "lucky" or
making under-the-breath comments that opponent can actually hear.
Too much celebration, such as yelling "COME ON!!" after every
single point won. It's fine to yell Come on when a point is hard
fought and won. But, it is unsportsmanlike conduct to cheer when
you opponent makes an unforced error and you GET the point, but did
not earn it! This just causes the other player to start doing it
and then the match gets really ugly. Hitting, bouncing racket on
the court (let's respect the court and our equipment). A single
soft warning will be given if player taps his racket on the court
after loss of point. Falling apart because you aren't winning.
Crying and carrying on is bad sportsmanship. In general, if you are
watching a match and have all good feelings about the behavior, the
sportsmanship is probably stellar!
Play formats:
Main Draw: Best of three full sets: 10 minute break between second
and third, coaching allowed. Lateness to court after 10 minute
break will be penalized: 0-5 minutes =1 game; 5-10 minutes= 2
games; 10-15 minutes = 3 games, greater than 15 = default
Consolation: Best of three with 10 point match tiebreak in lieu of
a third set. 3 minute coaching break between 2nd and 3rd set. If
you need to use the bathroom, you must first get the coaching and
then use the bathroom. Be sure to notify an official if you are
leaving the court area for any reason so that you are not penalized
for lateness after the 3 minutes coaching break. You are allowed to
use the bathroom after the 3 minute break but we need to know where
you are and you may not continue to receive coaching after the 3
minutes. Infraction for being late after the 3 minute break:
1 point after 20 seconds late and after 30 more seconds,
default.
Doubles: 8 game pro set through semi finals: 7 point, tie break at
8-all. Finals and playoffs will be Best of three with 10 point
match TB in lieu of third set.
We will have snacks and water for the families. We hope you have a
super pleasant experience and feel free to call me, Bonnie
Middlebrook (408-340-0969) or Michael Scadden (408-892-0963) if you
have any concerns or questions.
All the Best and Good Luck at the tournament,
