WHAT ARE ZONALS?
Zonals: The Zonal's
provide an opportunity to compete against top juniors from other USTA Sections.
They provide a great opportunity to play on a fun team and to develop and improve
physical, mental, and emotional skills. They also allow players to experience a
competitive team atmosphere and on-court coaching, just like college tennis.
For the 14's division, USTA NorCal will send three (3) teams, three (3)
team coaches. The 14's teams will have 6 boys and 6
girls per team.

ENTRY & SELECTION & PAYMENT
To be considered for this event, each player must: 1. Register Online (deadline is May 30th) 2. Complete the online waivers (below)
Team selection, including alternates, will be announced to all applicants by the end of Friday, June 3 via email. Alternates do not travel to the event. Selections will be based on the most recent ranking list available that will include the USTA National Selection tournaments May 28-30.

FORMAT & SCHEDULE
Each team will play four other teams so all players are guaranteed 4 singles and 4 doubles. Each team will have 12 players of 6 boys and 6 girls. There will be two flights of six teams. Singles matches will be best of 3 tie-break sets. Doubles matches will be 8 game Pro Sets with a 7 Point Tiebreak at 8 games all. Singles matches will count one point each. Doubles matches will count one point each. Each mixed doubles match will count one point for the team score but not for ranking.
Robin Round competition will be held the first four days. Each team will play four matches during the Round Robin competition. A Championship team match and other playoff team matches will be played on the last day of the event.
A team match consists of: 12 singles matches (6 boys’ singles and 6 girls’ singles) 4 doubles matches (2 boys’ doubles and 2 girls’ doubles) 2 mixed doubles matches
Each singles, doubles, and mixed doubles match counts for one point. The total possible points earned in a Team Match is 18 points. The team that wins the most points wins the Team Match. If the Team Match score is tied 9-9, the coach of each tied team shall designate one boy and one girl from their team to play a mixed doubles 10-Point Match Tiebreak to determine the Team Match Winner.
Match-play begins on Thursday July 7th and ends Monday July 11th. If selected, players should plan to arrive on Wednesday July 6th and must commit to the entire schedule. On the return trip, please schedule your departure for after 4:00 PM to allow time to get to the airport! Please see below under TRAVEL, MEALS & HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS.

SELECTION PROCESS
Registering for this event does not mean that you will automatically be selected. Selections will be based on the most recent ranking list available that will include the USTA National Selection tournaments May 28-30.
NorCal fields three (3) teams for the 14's divisions.
Eligibility: Players must meet the USTA national age eligibility and
citizenship requirements to be selected. Players must also meet the USTA NorCal
Residency requirements as described in Rule 3 of the USTA NorCal Junior
Tournament Rules.
Player Selection: Boys and girls 14's teams: 18 boys and 18 girls, will be selected from the
applicants as follows:
• Players not previously
selected that are ranked in the top 7 on the most recently published USTA
NorCal Combined Final Ranking List of the division

Standing List of the division AND who have played to completion at least one
USTA NorCal Championship, Super Series or Excellence Tournament within the

• Vacancies will be filled with
players from the most recently published USTA NorCal Combined Final Ranking
List of the division, selected by order of rank.
* Playing the tournament to
completion means a player must not have withdrawn from the tournament without
playing a match. Matches won by withdrawal, walkover, default and retirement
count as playing a match.

WITHDRAWALS AFTER ENTRY DEADLINE:
Immediately contact
Jon Fierabend (510-263-0471/ Fierabend@norcal.usta.com) if you need to withdraw from the tournament after entries close.
• If the withdrawal
is due to a injury or illness, the USTA Regulations require the injured or ill
player to submit written verification from a medical professional before the
end of the day on July 11th (the last day of the
tournament).
• If the withdrawal
is due to a personal circumstance, the player must submit a written description
of the situation no later than the end of the day on July 11th (the last day of the tournament) so that it
can be determined whether or not the situation qualifies as a personal
circumstance.
Please also
include the date it was determined the player needed to withdraw and if there
was a delay in notifying NorCal, please provide an explanation for the delay.

ENTRY FEE REFUNDS WHEN WITHDRAWAL OCCURS AFTER ENTRY DEADLINE:
Although the USTA
Regulations do not require an entry fee refund for a national tournament after
the entry deadline, NorCal has elected at its discretion to refund a
player’s entry fee:
• If the player immediately withdraws when
circumstances arise that do not permit participation and
• The player’s
withdrawal is due to illness, injury, or personal circumstance as evidenced by
the receipt of written verification as described above.

Wild cards are available for junior players to play in USTA NorCal Sectional Championships, USTA Zone Team Championships and USTA National Team Championships, and USTA Intersectional Team Championships.
• To be considered, a player must submit a timely entry to USTA NorCal AND apply for a Wild Card no later than the entry deadline - note that this is not the tournament entry deadline by which Sections must submit their teams to the tournament, but the published deadline set by NorCal for being eligible for consideration for selection. • The Wild Card Committee shall be comprised of the USTA NorCal staff and Chair of Junior Council. • Wild Cards do not have to be awarded. • There is no specific selection criteria for the Wild Cards, however the purpose of awarding Wild Cards (if any) shall be for NorCal to field the strongest teams possible.

PLAYING ORDER
Line-ups will be ordered as follows:
• Players in the top 100 of the most recently published National Standings List of the division will be ordered first, in the order of their standing.
• Remaining players are ordered by rank using the most recently published USTA NorCal Combined Final Ranking List of the division.
• Wild Card recipients will be placed in the lineup as determined by the Wild Card Committee.
Line-ups will be announced to the participants as soon as possible after selection and line-up order is determined.

RANKING POINTS
Players will receive sectional and national ranking points for each win in singles and doubles.
For USTA NorCal, each player will receive 125 sectional ranking points for each win in singles and doubles, regardless of the position of the player on the team. If one NorCal team happens to play another NorCal team, any Bonus Points earned will be awarded to this total.
For USTA, national ranking points will vary since ranking points earned are based on the playing position of each player on the line-up. Any Bonus Points earned will be added to the total for national rankings.

FEES
$245 (if parent IS attending) - This fee includes the $95 application fee and $150 coaching
fee. USTA NorCal covers uniform for the players. $495 (if parent is NOT attending) - This
fee includes the $95 application fee, $250 for five nights of lodging, and $150
coaching fee. USTA NorCal covers uniform for the players. All players are required to travel with NorCal coaches and
managers and stay in at the tournament hotel. Parents are welcome
to attend, but the players MUST be with their team at all times. USTA NorCal
would like to provide the players with an experience similar to an away college
team match as much as possible.
Players will be charged the fee after getting selected for the team.

TRAVEL, MEALS, HOSPITALITY
Players are responsible for the cost of airfare, meal expenses, and
hotel accommodations. Some meals will be provided at the tournament
site. Once team coaches have been selected, players will receive
information about their itineraries to help arrange same flights or
similar arrival/departure times.
Information about hotel rooms available at preferred rates will be
posted once we are given hotel information from the Tournament Director
in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

TEAM COACH
The USTA Northern California Section will select and send three (3) team coaches and three. Team coaches may coach players at specific times during matches and will work together with team managers to supervise the teams. Team managers, players’ personal coaches and parents are NOT permitted to coach during this event.

TEAM MANAGERS

TEAM WORKOUT
ALL players selected are expected to attend a MANDATORY team practice with the team coaches on July 2 at Stanford University.The approximately 3-hour team workout event will include no less than 2 hours of tennis and a meeting/party with food following tennis. There is no charge to the team workout.
This team workout will be held by the team coaches and USTA NorCal staff for the participants in the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 16, 14, and 12 Zone Team Championships and the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 18 National Team Championships. Attendance by the players is mandatory, unless clearance is given by USTA NorCal.

ONLINE WAIVER
After a waiver is completed and submitted a reference number will appear after you have successfully completed the waiver.
Note: Be sure to provide your email address and cell phone number during the registration process.
Selected players will be required to make an online payment to confirm their spot on the team.

Players are selected manually by the tournament director after the close of registration.
Entry to this tournament is open to all USTA members. Entries must be submitted by Monday, May 30, 2016 11:59:00 PM Pacific Time. Only USTA members can register online if available.
