Facts About the 2015 Fox Chapel Junior Open
Thank you for entering the 18th
Annual Fox Chapel Junior Open, the
most popular junior tennis tournament in the district this year and one of the
largest in the state. We have 130 singles entrants – 68 boys and 62 girls. There are 64 players in doubles on 13 girls' teams and 19 boys' teams.
The direct tournament link
is: http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/TournamentHome/Tournament.aspx?T=155379
The tournament ID is: 351115515.
This tournament moves at a
very fast pace, weather permitting. We
hope to complete the singles by Wednesday and the doubles by Thursday. We use
no-ad scoring and a 10-point tie breaker in lieu of a third set. Matches
average about an hour and most of you will be playing TWO matches on Monday,
regardless of whether you win or lose your first match.
Please report to the
Tournament Desk at the Fox Chapel Racquet Club, 355 Hunt Road, Fox Chapel
(Pittsburgh, PA 15238) to initially register and pick up your Tournament
T-Shirt – and to find out the time of your next match. After Monday you may go directly to the
tournament site for your match that is listed on the Posted Draw.
We will be using up to 22
courts at the same time at five different sites – all within a 2-mile
radius in Fox Chapel . We will play some
200 main draw and consolation matches. The tournament sites are:
·
Fox Chapel Racquet Club – (Tournament Desk)- (FCRC)
·
Pittsburgh Field Club – (PFC) 364 Squaw Run Road, 15238
·
Shady Side Academy– (SSA) 423 Fox Chapel Road, 15238
·
Fox Chapel Golf Club – (GC) 426
Fox Chapel Road, 15238
·
Fox Chapel Area High School – (HS) 601 Field Club Road,
15238
For appreciate that many of
you are traveling great distances for this tournament. We have players from
Erie, Altoona, Johnstown, Beaver and Butler (and two young visitors from
Hawaii). There are many fine motels in
the area that will make those early morning matches more manageable. The Super
8 (412-828-8900) and Days Inn (412-828-5400), both in Harmarville, are the most
affordable at around $75 a night.
Many of your matches – and
all finals – will be held at private clubs with Har-Tru (clay) courts. Please
remember the Dress Code! It’s 80 percent
white tennis attire. Shoes with an
aggressive tread design that would damage the clay courts are not permitted.
Feel free to bring plenty of
water, snacks and sunscreen. The Fox Chapel Racquet Club has an air-conditioned
gameroom, locker room and a fully stocked sandwich and snack bar. Cash is
accepted.
So let’s get ready for some
fun, competitive tennis. There will be up to 6 trophies in each singles
division and photos taken of all trophy winners. You don’t have to win every
match to enjoy this tournament.
The seeding, by the way, was
done strictly by the USTA’s tournament software program based strictly on your
record in USTA district and section tournaments in the age division you are
competing. If you haven’t played much tournament tennis in the past year or are
playing up an age division in this tournament, the software will not seed you.
There will be roving
tournament officials who should be asked to officiate all tiebreakers. But, as
with nearly all amateur tennis tournaments, most calls will be made by the
players themselves on their side of the court. If you are not sure of what call
to make – out or in -- call it in favor of your opponent. Better to lose the
point but gain the respect of your opponent and spectators. You also might win
the Sportsmanship Award, a highlight of the tournament each year.
Questions? Emergencies? Please contact the tournament chairman at tom@benic.net or call or text 412-417-4477.
Best of luck to all of you.
The Tournament Committee.
