WHAT IS THE USTA ZONE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS?
The USTA sanctions four (4) Zone Team Championships (Zonals) for 14-and-under boys and girls, held in late July each year. The Zonals provide an opportunity to compete against top juniors from other USTA Sections. They provide a great opportunity to play on a fun team and to develop and improve physical, mental, and emotional skills. They also allow players to experience a competitive team atmosphere and on-court coaching, just like college tennis. For the 14s division, USTA NorCal is in the Southwest Zone and will send three (3) teams, three (3) team coaches and three (3) team managers to this year’s event.
|
EVENT LOCATION:
Colorado Springs, Colorado @ United States Air Force Academy
|
DRAW & MATCH FORMAT:
The draw format will be Round Robin. Each team will play four other teams so all players are guaranteed 4 singles and 4 doubles. Each team will have 12 players of 6 boys and 6 girls. There will be two flights of six teams. Singles matches will be best of 3 tie-break sets. Doubles matches will be 8 game Pro Sets with a 7 Point Tiebreak at 8 games all. Singles matches will count one point each. Doubles matches will count one point each. Each mixed doubles match will count one point for the team score but not for ranking. A team match consists of:
12 singles matches (6 boys’ singles and 6 girls’ singles)
4 doubles matches (2 boys’ doubles and 2 girls’ doubles)
2 mixed doubles matches
Each team match consists of 18 points (12 singles plus 6 doubles). In the case of a 9-9 tie, the team that won the majority of the doubles matches will be declared the winner. In the case of a total tie (no majority winner of the doubles) the Section Coach will designate one boy and one girl to play a mixed doubles "Super Match Tie-Break" to determine the team match winner. Defaults, walkovers, withdrawals, and retirements count as losses. All singles and doubles matches will play to completion.
Match-play begins on Wednesday July 27 and ends Sunday July 31 . If selected, players should plan to arrive on Tuesday July 26 and must commit to the entire schedule. For players traveling with team coaches and team managers, on the return trip, please schedule your departure for after 4:00PM around the same time as the team coaches’ and team managers’ to allow time to get to the airport! Please see below under TRAVEL & MEALS.

TEAM SELECTION:
Registering for this event does not mean that you will automatically be selected. Participation on this team requires Section endorsement. Selections will be based on the Summer Endorsement Lists that will be published after the USTA NorCal Sectional Championships. Tournaments through June 20, 2011 will be included in the computation of the Endorsement Lists that will be used for selections.
Only the top twelve (12) boys and top twelve (12) girls to apply from the Summer Endorsement Lists will be selected and will form Team NorCal
Each player shall have 100 points added to their singles point total if the player has played at least three doubles events to completion that count for USTA NorCal doubles rankings between January 1 and the date of publication of the Summer Endorsement Lists in 2011. In order for a player to play a doubles event to completion they may not have withdrawn from the doubles event for any reason.
Any player under suspension or probation at the time the Summer Endorsement Lists are published can be denied endorsement to the event. Team selections, including alternates, will be posted on the USTA NorCal Junior Tournament Schedules web page by July 1, 2011. Alternates do not travel to the event.
|
PLAYING ORDER ON THE TEAM:
Singles playing order on the team line-up for the Zonals will be determined by Sectional Ranking lists.
|
RANKING POINTS:
Players will receive sectional and national ranking points for each win in singles and doubles. No ranking points will be given for mixed doubles.
For USTA NorCal, each player will receive 125 sectional ranking points for each win in singles and doubles, regardless of the position of the player on the team. If one NorCal team happens to play another NorCal team, any Bonus Points earned will be awarded to this total. This is only the case for the 14s Zonals because there are three NorCal teams and only two flights.
For USTA, national ranking points will vary since ranking points earned are based on the position a player is on a team. Any Bonus Points earned will be added to the total for national rankings. The maximum number of national ranking points that can be earned at Zonals is 250+Bonus Points.
