The committee is busy preparing for Saturday, but we wanted to
throw out some questions you might be having as a McKinley Mixed
newbie!
This seems like a lot of tennis in a short amount of time...do
these organizers really know what they are doing? Have no fear!
The tournament committee is grounded in common sense and have all
participated in horribly run tournaments. This won't be that! Will
you have to play more matches that what section 12.5.subsection
18.3 says in the manual? Probably! If we fall behind in the
schedule will we still play 2 out of 3 sets? Of course not! Would
we allow someone to play an 8 game pro-set if they haven't left the
court for 5 hours? Yes! Although... Sallman/Webster were on court
for approx. 12 hours last year and were one of first registrants
this year. (And three hours of their matches were in Moorland's
sauna-like conditions.) I think you catch the drift.
Do I get to take a break to eat and hydrate? Yes, you will
catch breaks through the day. Bring everything you might need to
eat and drink. We have some basics and Colectivo is a pitching
wedge away from the courts.
Wait a second, I didn't realize how good some of these players
were. Am I in over my head? No! Could you run into a buzz saw?
You bet, but get back on the horse as you navigate the backdraws.
It will also allow us to watch a phenomenal final over cold drinks
that will be a great appetizer to Sunday's Breakfast at
Wimbledon.
Do I really have to stick around for a "Reprieve" match
(whatever the heck that is)? YES! Your fellow tennis players
are counting on you to continue through these draws. No matter how
bad of a loss you take on the chin and would prefer to just pout
:)
Why is the committee organizing this tourney? Are they making
money on this? McKinley was and is a special place for
Milwaukee's tennis culture. We want to keep it going. We try to
stay within striking distance of "breakeven", and have absolutely
no shot at making money. Which is also why we will have little
tolerance for poor sportsmanship or being a pain. Here are some
helpful don'ts:
---Don't ask for a line judge
---Don't ask your opponent if they "are sure" on a call, this isn't
the 14s WI Closed
---Don't fist pump/cheer after your opponent double faults
---Don't pinch and squeeze or chatter your feet to an irritating
level (you know what we mean)
---Don't harass the site volunteers about "who is up next" or "can
I go on next because I have plans tonight"
How come the person I beat earlier got a winner's towel, but I
didn't?! Great question and congratulations on having a win
over a "towel winner"!
I really didn't want to have to play inside on a beautiful day
in Milwaukee. Ughh! We totally get it. Everyone will get to
play outside. If we wanted to guarantee indoor access and stay
within budget, we need to use the Helfaer courts a bit. It's a cool
spot. Pun intended.
Cheers to a great 2019 McKinley Mixed and we are very thankful of
your participation!
