Let's share information and all the great pictures we will be taking by using #palmetto2017

INCLEMENT WEATHER
In the event of inclement weather, we will immediately post any delays on this homepage. Please check this site often for up-to-the-minute tournament information!
|
Lightning Policy
The Palmetto Championships uses athletic trainers provided by Playsafe and adheres to their lightning policy below: Lightning Policy
The AT (Athletic Trainer) will use WeatherBug to monitor for
possible inclement weather. The AT will make the decision to inform the site
officials if conditions become too dangerous to continue. When lightning is within
15 miles the AT will inform everyone “heads up” in person or via cell
phone/radios. Once lightning is within 10 miles of our area the AT, officials
or site director will notify all persons and they are to clear the courts and
seek shelter immediately with no
questions asked.
Once conditions have been determined to be unsafe, all
athletes, coaches, officials, and others will move to an enclosed, frequently
inhabited building with plumbing and electricity. If this is not possible, the
next best thing is a car or team bus with a metal roof.
***Dugouts, sheds,
open shelters/awnings or porches, convertibles, and golf carts ARE NOT SAFE!!***
***The official
decision to return to play will be made by the AT in conjunction with the site
director and officials while using the above mentioned available technological
resources to determine when play is deemed safe to resume.*** This is once the
lightning has been out of the area for at least 30 minutes without any further
lightning strikes detected.
TL Hanna High School and
Clemson University Lightning Procedures
The ATC will use Thor Guard and WeatherBug, in conjunction,
to monitor for possible inclement weather since these locations have the Thor
Guard lightning detection system available. The ATC will make the decision to
notify site officials if conditions become too dangerous to continue and as
back up if the Thor guard system fails for whatever reason. There are two Thor
Guard stations on both school campus. The one located on top of the football press
box will be the most visible and audible to the tennis courts at each school. Once Thor Guard reaches “Red Alert” a 15 second solid blast will sound and the light will
begin flashing. When Thor Guard is no longer in “Red Alert” 3, 5second blasts
will sound and the light will stop flashing.
Once conditions have been determined to be unsafe, all
athletes, coaches, officials, and others will move to an enclosed, frequently
inhabited building with plumbing and electricity. If this is not possible, the
next best thing is a car/vehicle or team bus with a metal roof.
***Dugouts, sheds, Open
shelters/awnings or porches, convertibles, and golf carts ARE NOT SAFE!!
***
Athletic Trainers will allow safe access to the nearest
indoor facility at these locations
for those who do not have a vehicle present or other safe location to take
cover inside of.
***The official
decision to return to play will be made by the AT in conjunction with the site
officials while using the above mentioned available technological resources to
determine when play is deemed safe to resume. *** This is
once the lightning has been out of the area for at least 30 minutes without any
further lightning strikes detected.
Technological
Issues
In the event of technological issues with WeatherBug and the
Thor Guard systems, the AT, official or site director will make the decision
based on common sense and the flash to bang technique. Once a flash/lightning
is seen, an individual (AT, official or Site director) should begin to count
the seconds until the bang/thunder is heard. If the count is 50 seconds or
under, the courts should begin clearing and by the time a count of 30 seconds
is determined all courts should be completely cleared as this is approximately
6 miles away and you are now in danger. (50/5=10, 30/5 = 6). A 30minute clock to return to the courts
should be set and with each additional strike detected the clock should be
restarted again at 30 minutes until the 30 minutes can be reached without being
reset. The time will be monitored and
adjusted by the AT, official, or site director covering that site as stated
above.
Play can resume once
the lightning has been determined, by the AT, site director or official, to be out
of the area for at least 30 minutes without any further lightning strikes being
detected.
NOTE: In the event an AT is not present, it will be
up to the official and/or site director to make decisions about lightning using
the information given in this policy and common sense. Please keep up with the changing weather
conditions predicted for that day and be proactive by “keeping an eye to the
sky” for these changes.
WeatherBug is a Free Downloadable Mobile Weather App. Please download this app and familiarize
yourself with it prior to the beginning of any contest and its use.
Common Alerts for Real-Time Notification of Lightning Alert
Meanings per NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association): ‘‘Heads up’’
Lightning within 15 mi (13 nmi) ‘‘Begin safety procedures’’ Lightning within 10
mi (8.68 nmi) ‘‘You are now in danger; safety procedures should be complete’’
Lightning within 6 mi (5.2nmi) ‘‘All clear’’ Lightning has not been detected at
15 mi (13 nmi) for 30 min

Palmetto Championships 2016 USTA Southern Jim Russell Junior Tournament of the Year
The Palmetto Championships was
named the 2016 USTA Southern Jim Russell Junior Tournament of the Year.
The award was presented during the USTA Southern Awards Luncheon in Atlanta in
January. The USTA Southern Section includes 9 states. The Palmetto,
which is played over memorial Day weekend, celebrated it’s 60th
anniversary in Belton last year with over 430 players. The tournament is
sponsored by Chick-fil-A of Anderson and serves as the national qualifying
tournament for junior players in South Carolina. This was the third time
the Palmetto has been recognized with this award, but long time Tournament
Director Rex Maynard said this was the most meaningful: “We appreciate
the support of our staff, officials, sponsors, community and players.
Chick-fil-A of Anderson is a wonderful title sponsor. They offer much
more than funding and product…they offer their support before, during and after
the event. They are a great partner and a big part of our success.
This is the third time the Palmetto has been recognized with this honor, but
this is by far the most meaningful and the first time since the award was named
in memory of Big Jim Russell. Jim was the Referee of the Palmetto for
over 35 years, and he had so much to do with making the event the success it is
today. We look forward to continuing this South Carolina tennis tradition
for many more years in Belton, and we accept this award with gratitude for and
in memory of Big Jim.”

The Chick-fil-A Palmetto Championships has been played in

qualifying tournament. Players must play in the Palmetto
Championships to advance to the Southern Closed Championships.
Championships are determined in 5 age divisions for both boys and
girls in singles and doubles. The Palmetto is closed to residents
