Singles Champions
The 2012 girls singles champions are: 10U-Calissa Dellabarca (Blythewood), 12U-Emma Navaro (Charleston), 14U-McKenna Jones (Greenville), 16U-Rachael McNeely (Westminster) and 18U-Haley Carter (Columbia).
The 2012 boys singles champions are: 10U-William Ross (Sullivan's Island), 12U-Brant Fenno (Mt. Pleasant), 14U-Specer Brown (Spartanburg), 16U-Hampton Drake (Hilton Head Island) and 18U-Chris Cox (Myrtle Beach).

Three Sportsmanship Awards Presented
Three sportsmanship awards were presented during the awards ceremony on Thursday following the conclusion of the singles finals. The Kimberly Hampton Memorial Sportsmanship Award for a 12U girl went to Elise Mills of Prosperity. Mills finished 3rd in singles. The Matthew Strange Memorial Sportsmanship Award for a 12U boy went to Sam Kavarana of Charleston. Kavarana finished 6th in singles. The overall tournament award, the Malloy Evans Memorial Sportsmanship Award, went to Thomas Spratt of Charleston, a participant in the Boys' 18U. Spratt finished 7th in singles and was a finalist in doubles.

Records Tied & Broken
Several records were tied or broken at this year's Palmetto Championships. Spencer Brown of Spartanburg won his 5th consecutive singles title, tying the boys' record, which is currently held by 4 other players. Chip Cox of Myrtle Beach returned to Belton to win his 4th straight 18U singles championship, a feat accomplished only twice in the previous 56 years (Jean Evans of Belton in 1960-63 and Chuck Hodgin of Sumter in 1974-77). Haley Carter of Columbia won both the 18U singles and doubles to give her 14 Palmetto titles to break Janice Durden's record for girls of 13 set between 1984 and 1991.

Johnson Wins Dunlop Scholarship
Thomas Johnson of Greenville was named the recipient of the 2012 Dunlop Scholarship during the 18U Party Monday evening in Belton. Johnson graduated from Christ Church School in Greenville where he played the #1 singles position the past 6 years. He was a 3-time team MVP and 4-time All State Player, as well as an Eagle Scout. Thomas will be attending Washington & Lee University this fall.

Roy Mac Haggard named 2012 Honorary Chairman
Roy Mac Haggard of Belton was named the 2012 tournament's Honorary Chairman at the Palmetto Fling Tuesday night. Roy Mac has been a long time volunteer for the Palmetto Championships working in maintenance and hosting the officials. He currently serves on the Belton Tennis Association Board and is very active in many other community organizations. THANKS AND CONGRATULATIONS ROY MAC!

State Closed Tournament
The Palmetto Championships is the South Carolina junior qualifying tournament. Players must reside in the state of South Carolina to be eligible to participate. No state ranking or standing is required unless entries exceed 64 players in an age divisiion, in which case standing will be used for selection. All playes should go ahead and enter the tournament. Your credit card will not be charged until you are selected for the tournament.

Birth Certificates Required
A birth certificate or green card must be on file with USTA Southern for proof of US citizenship in order to play in the Palmetto Championship before the tournament begins on June 2. You can click on the link below to check to see if you are already on file with USTA Southern. If you are not, please submit your birth certificate to USTA South Carolina via fax at 803-753-9255 or e-mail competitionintern@sctennis.com as soon as possible.

The Chick-fil-A Palmetto Championships is the South Carolina
junior qualifying tournament and has been played in Belton and
Anderson since 1957. All 10's, 12's and 14's and 16's girls play in
Anderson during the first part of the tournament, then move to
Belton. 16's boys, 18's boys and 18's girls play in Belton for the
duration of the tournament. Singles draws are limited to 64 players
(except Boy's 10U, Girl's 10U and Girl's 18U, which are limited to
32 players). Players are selected for the tournament based on their
South Carolina standing at the entry deadline. Any junior player
who lives in South Carolina may enter. The credit card will not be
charged until the player is selected for the tournament.

Entry to this tournament is open to specified residents only. Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, May 23, 2012 11:59:00 PM Eastern Time. Only USTA members can register online if available.
